A Pro-Palestine Mob Attacks My Los Angeles Neighborhood

Violent anti-Israel activists beat Jews outside of a shul and roam the Pico-Robertson neighborhood threatening Jews. The mayor and city leaders vow to make our community safer. Will they?

We are reeling here in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood. On Sunday, hundreds of thugs from a group called the Palestinian Youth Movement, as well as Code Pink, descended on Pico Boulevard outside Adas Torah synagogue, all but securing the shul’s entry points from the front and the side walkways and monopolizing both sides of the street.

The provocation for the attacks was a seminar taking place inside the shul about buying land in Israel. Such seminars have been taking place in many US cities, and one last week took place in Valley Village, a 30-minute drive from my neighborhood. The event last week, at Shaarei Tzedek synagogue, attracted fewer protestors but was still alarming.

“Our land is not for sale,” screamed the flyer issued by the Palestine Youth Movement, urging people to come at noon and take a “stand against settler expansion in Palestine.” Adas Torah is a popular, bustling shul and a five-minute walk from my house. Before noon, we heard police helicopters overhead, and I was monitoring WhatsApp messages from my shul—a one minute walk from Adas—about the growing chaos on Pico Boulevard. I had planned to walk over to show my support for Israel, but Magen Am, one of our volunteer security agencies, advised staying away.

The Los Angeles Police Department, which has had an excellent relationship with the Jewish community, was completely unprepared. The thugs not only blocked entry to the shul for Jews but tried many times to break into the shul itself. On the street they sprayed Jews with bear spray and physically assaulted others, beating them on the ground.

The situation was escalating, with altercations beginning between Jews and the thugs, yet police stood down. This lack of police response has shocked us, as we have enjoyed excellent relations with our police department, the result of years of careful cultivation between our community liaisons and the LAPD. During Covid, and when police were under siege after the George Floyd riots, the LA Jewish community made special efforts to show the LAPD its appreciation, by bringing occasional dinners, thank you notes from adults and children alike, and in other ways showing our support for their efforts to keep the community safe. In turn, the LAPD has offered extra patrols in our areas during Jewish holidays and after any other significant antisemitic event around the country.

But on Sunday, the police didn’t even separate the two groups on opposite sides of the street. They didn’t intervene until the fights and attacks had escalated, yet only one arrest was made by the end of the day. When the police finally ordered the entire street scene dispersed, several mob members began roaming our residential streets, threatening Jews directly and wielding makeshift weapons. No police were around while this was happening.

Many Jews today are ready to fight back and many did on Sunday. When some mob members headed toward a kosher bagel shop with intent to break in, Jews stopped them with the threat of force. The thugs backed away.

Baila Romm is a civilian liaison to the LAPD for the Jewish community, elected board member of the South Robertson Neighborhood Council, and co-chair of the Council’s Public Safety Committee. She was appalled at Sunday’s chaos. “The ‘pro-Palestinian’ aggressors had a plan and they executed it very well,” she said. “The LAPD didn’t expect such a large and coordinated attack, and they only called for back-up when wave after wave of aggressors showed up. It was a horrible situation and has deeply affected me and every Jewish person who was there.”

With Los Angeles as a popular vacation destination for Jews, Romm said that this attack will have worldwide repercussions. “People will feel this more deeply when they have been here and relate LA with having had good, positive experiences as Jews,” she said.

On Monday afternoon, there was an emergency meeting at the Simon Wiesenthal Center with community leaders, including Mayor Karen Bass, members of the L.A. City Council, the head of Magen Am, the head of the Jewish Federation Council, the Chief of Police, and Jewish community leaders, including Rabbi Abraham Cooper, director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Sunday was a disaster and a shock for the Jewish community and a terrible black eye for city leadership, under whose watch this occurred. Baila Romm also attended the meeting, and we sat together during the press conference that followed.

At the press conference, the mayor and others said all the right things about violence and antisemitism being totally unacceptable, and mentioned their plans to demand more homeland security money and other funds to make synagogues more secure. They spoke about common sense, long overdue measures, such as making it illegal for protestors to wear masks in public, requiring permits before such protests, and working with the FBI to find out more about who is behind these attacks.

Politicians say what they need to say, and the proof of their seriousness is yet to come. Money and resources are also vital, but the poison that is antisemitism cannot be bought off. This is a matter of education: moral, historical, spiritual, and even psychological.

I have lived in this neighborhood for 24 years, and have seen other waves of antisemitic violence here. Last year, on two consecutive mornings, five blocks away, on the street where my son lives, two men were shot leaving shul. We’ve also had waves of other attacks against Jewish stores, shuls, and establishments, as well as attacks on Jews physically, just as Jews are enduring in cities around the world.

But Sunday’s attack was on another, more dangerous level, and I’m not sure we’ll be able to shake the feeling of heightened vulnerability. We already have armed guards almost everywhere we go. Now, large scale protests by virulent antisemites are no longer just “over there.” They’re here, and they’re here now. Ironically, what happened on Sunday will only drive up demand for the seminars about buying land in Israel. We just have to figure out a way to get the word out in a secret code.

I live in Pennsylvania. Why do Jews have to make Aaliyah? I already experience enough persecution against me from Satan here. Satan is present everywhere because He is a spiritual entity. Why can't we all as followers of HaShem unite on a spiritual basis instead of the physical land of Israel, promised to us as it is, and ideologically align our Jewish doctrines on warfare and ethics spiritually and physically so that we fit our rules to a ubiquitous standard we create for ourselves so that as we implement it and develop it everywhere on earth we can unite our paradigms into a single ideology and the paradigm thereof? If we create for ourselves a code that meets the requirements of all the living constraints always yet everywhere and commit ourselves to comply with it before Elohaynu, yes?

Don't blame the cops. Blame Mayor Bass who refused to order the police to do their job. Probably because she's afraid to lose the Muslim vote in the next election.

This is not going away. Seems to me Jews need yo pick a side. Support Israel and live openly observant Jewish which means confronting growing antisemitism and anti Zionism ( often but not always the same)which means move to Israel or fight in the USA against various groups. Progressive democrats many in the black and Hispanic and many alt right conservatives. The other option is assimilation being of Jewish ethnicity but no problem with interfaith marriage and no need for a Jewish State. No guarantees but those seem to me the main options. While not easy or for all moving to Israel seems to me the best option for most particularly children where feasible. The JDL in the late 60s and 70 s was helpful so maybe that's worth bring back.

I agree, the JDL was started by Rabbi Meir Kahane(obm), what Kahane(obm) said what will happen in exile, and what will happen in Israel came to past, unfortunely he(obm) was 100% right, we need activists like him(obm), to form groups to protect the Jews from anti semites/ anti Israel since the 1960s/1970s it got much these days, with brainwashing students on higher places of learning and even public school, one parent sent their Jewish daughter to college and was pro Israel/pro zionist in college they brainwash your kids/ grandkids against yourself and Israel, something has to be done to stop the damage of the Arab oil funding this, the head of california told the police not to stop the terrorist bullys so the shul should sue the county

Newsflash: "Palestine" is free; it's a legal entity called Israel— God-given homeland of the Jews—who have always been there, albeit as a minority after the Diaspora.
Check the facts: Jews in Israel have bent over backwards to live in peace with Arab residents, and Israeli Arabs enjoy equal rights, unlike Jews who lived in Arab countries.

Intifada is a call for genocide (as if you don't know!), whereas the IDF risks its own to save (supposedly) "innocent" civilian lives in its existential war in Gaza, brought on by the barbaric brutality of Hamas. (BTW, Gaza was handed to the so-called "Palestinians" on a silver platter as a gesture towards peace -- what a sorry waste!)

You should not be surprised that the cops don’t respond. They’re not required to BY LAW. Note that if there’s a riot or large crowds the cops will not respond because they are not supported by the mayor and are TOLD to stand down. Jews need to arm themselves and learn how to use their weapons to defend themselves. It would have been wiser to have these types of meetings over Skype, Zoom, or other secure non-localized method. Get armed guards. With the open border and millions of unvetted illegal aliens in the country you are no longer safe. Get that into your head.

Get it through your heads: the land has was never “occupied” by Jews. It was land granted to Arabs by previous non-owners of the land, such as Turkey. The land itself has belonged to the Jews for 3,000 years. It was stolen and colonized by the Romans, the Mamelukes, various other Muslims, then by Turkey, then by Great Britain (although they governed it as a protectorate) then, after the Israeli War of Independence, by the Jews—at least, some of it. The Jews, even though they technically owned much of the land from 2,000 years before, had the decency to buy back their land, usually at inflated prices, from the Arabs who were essentially renting it from the Turkish empire, and never owned it themselves. They were too dumb to understand this.

The "land" was not "granted" to the Arabs. The Ottomans took it over in about 1516 when they defeated the Mamelukes. The Ottomans were then the sovereign. The Turks and Arabs really did not get along very well. The Arabs just claimed it all during the onset of WWI. With the defeat of the Ottomans during WWI, the Balfour Declaration was developed. It's complicated, but Britian really became the sovereign after the Turks who gave up their claims. It all fell apart under British control which ended on 05/14/1948. The White Paper of 1939 is the point in time when the Brits stopped all further Jewish immigration and said the land not then in Jewish possession would be needed for future Arab populations, but the Arabs rejected this because they claimed it all, so that arrangement went "south".

The Israeli Declaration of Independance of 05/14/1948 offered the Arabs a One State Solution with full equality. Try reading it sometime. The Arab response was "Kill All Jews". This is echoed in the Charter of Hamas of 08/18/1988 and in Verse 9:30 of the Koran. It also applies to all Christians as does Verse 9:29. Try reading those as well. Obviously, you seem not to understand the term "Kill All Jews (and all Christians)". So who is Satan? Folks like you.

Now I can understand why Arabs have migrated all over the globe: They apparently read The Elders of Zion and decided to take on the role of which the Jews in the Diaspora were falsely accused -- the desire to take control of the world.

Of course, the difference is that Jews benefitted their host countries by contributing significantly to every field of societal endeavor, completely out of proportion to their numbers. Muslim Arabs do the opposite: they destroy rather than build, causing havoc with their violence (most but not all of which is directed against Jews), also out of proportion to their numbers.

No easy solution but to pray, and in the meantime it makes more sense than ever not just to buy property in our homeland, but to make actually aliyah, b'ez"H.

Bahahaha! They, the Germans, like the Palestinians, were suffering before Hitler, Here we go again. I don’t want to teach this fool what is so readily available to everyone: knowledge. I’m German so I know that history. You continue to make a fool of yourself. Poor thing.

Don’t take a picture with the mobile phone. It was created by a Jew.

I disagree. It’s because the Muslims still live in the 12th century and believe that they are going to take over the world. They can’t stand that they’re third best in the Abrahamic religions. Christians have benefited the world more than Muslims ever will because Islam is a tyrannical religion and embraces a death cult mentality.

I think you live in the 12th century with ideas like those. There is nothing wrong with any religion, only with the people who practice it, Abrahamic or otherwise. How is that for a more contemporary idea?

There is a lot wrong with some religions.

So close but so far ...

Islam will take over the world BECAUSE it is a tyrannical religion and embraces a death cult mentality.

What will stop them?

You almost got it right, Barb.

It has been the goal of the Arabs from the beginning to convert the world to Islam. I haven't read The Elders of Zion but I have read the Qur'an.

That's what you got out of the Quran? Liar, you haven't read the Quran 🙂

OK, but that doesn't make them different from another major religion.
Jews not only don't encourage conversion by force, they try to discourage it.

"The truth"? Whose truth? Some writers on this site have even suggested that "chosen people" means chosen to spread the Jewish "truth" to the rest of the world. That's almost as arrogant as what some major religions say.

No man is capable of understanding the entire complexity of this world, including the founders of the various religions.

No. Ask Hamas. They do it on purpose for the publicity and then lie on top of it. We will know them by their fruits. The fruit of radical Islam is rotten and full of worms.

You're great at leaving out pertinent details -- like the fact that their blood is on Hamas' hands, which goes to show how vile they are!
You're either falling for their big-lie propaganda and biased, leftist reports, or you're simply a Jew-hater.

You don't have to keep repeating that Hamas is as bad as IDF. We got that a few days after Genocide Joe hugged Satanyahoo. I am not falling for anything or anyone. I have a sound mind of my own that I listen to. As for "Jew-hater," you can hurl insults that may be hurtful but I rest easy because it is untrue and you have absolutely no proof otherwise.

You said it yourself: you listen to (only) your own mind -- that's not a truth seeker's way because people naturally have a certain degree of bias.
I brought up "Jew-hater" as a possibility, not a fact, but "if the shoe fits, wear it." Alternately, get a new pair of shoes.

If Hamas really cared about its civilians, children included, they would have prepared safe rooms for them in those miles and miles of underground tunnels. Instead, civilians are barred from entering the tunnels - they are solely to protect terrorists.

Sign off DocRF. Your rhetoric is bigoted, racist, insulting, and quite unprofessional as is your potty mouth. You are a mere troll exuberant in your defamation of anyone who disagrees with you or expresses opinions differing from yours whilst set brave by your anonymity, Go wash your mouth out and troll elsewhere. Clearly, you have arrived from under the same rock as the violent protesters. As such, I am hoping no one will communicate with you anymore and will just ignore you. They are far too good for the swill coming from your mouth.
