Iran Attacks, Israel Unites: The Eternal Jewish Response

Throughout history, the Jewish people have faced enemies bent on their destruction. Today is no different — and neither is the response.

As missiles rain down on Israeli cities and the Jewish State confronts the growing aggression of Iran and its proxies, we find ourselves living a modern echo of our ancient story. Once again, the Jewish people are being tested — not only by the threats from those who seek our destruction, but by the call to unity, courage, and faith.

After the miraculous Exodus from Egypt and 40 years of wandering in the desert, the Jewish nation stood poised to finally enter the Land of Israel. The journey had been long and the road ahead would not be simple. There would be battles, uncertainties, and challenges waiting on the other side of the Jordan River.

At this critical moment, two of the tribes Reuven and Gad approached Moses with a request. They had seen the land on the east side of the Jordan and believed it was ideal for their livestock and families. Rather than entering the Land of Israel proper, they asked for permission to settle there, outside the boundaries of what would become the country of Israel.

Moses’ reaction was swift and intense. How could they consider separating themselves from their brothers and sisters at this moment? How could they stand back while the rest of the nation would soon have to fight for their homeland? He saw their request as a betrayal, as a failure to stand together as one unified people.

Jews must always be there for one another.

Moses reminded them that this was not going to be an easy entrance into the land. There would be battles. There would be loss. There would be sacrifice.

Immediately, Reuven and Gad clarified their intentions. They assured Moses that they would not abandon their brothers. They pledged to leave their families and flocks behind and to cross over the Jordan alongside the rest of the Jewish people. They would fight shoulder to shoulder with their nation and return to their land only once the mission was complete. Their message was clear: Jews must always be there for one another.

A Unified Family

This is not just a story from our ancient past. It is a foundational principle of what it means to be part of the Jewish people. Throughout history, Jews have stood by each other in times of crisis and in moments of joy. Our identity has never been purely religious, nationalistic, or cultural. We are not a race, nor simply a religion. We are not only a nation or an ethnicity. We are something deeper and more profound: We are a family.

Families take care of each other. They defend each other. They show up for one another, not because it is convenient, but because it is right. That is who we are.

Israel’s Protection

This idea was on my mind this past Shabbat. As the sun set and we turned off our phones, entering into the sanctity of Shabbat, I was standing on the porch at Aish in Jerusalem. I looked up and saw streaks in the sky. Missiles launched by Iran were heading toward Israel, and we watched in real time as the Iron Dome and other defense systems knocked them out of the sky.

It was surreal, yet it was also awe-inspiring. In that moment, I was struck by the realization that Israel has two essential assets that protect her. The first is the unmatched bravery of the members of the IDF. These are our children. Our neighbors. Our students. They are not anonymous soldiers. They are our family, and they are willing to risk everything to defend our homeland.

We do not survive because we are more powerful or more numerous. We survive because God protects us.

The second is the Almighty. God has stood with us through every chapter of our history. We do not survive because we are more powerful or more numerous. We survive because we are part of an eternal covenant. We are here because God said to Abraham thousands of years ago, “This is your home.” That promise still echoes in our time.

Never Again

Watching those rockets get intercepted over Jerusalem, I was reminded of another moment in modern Israeli history that speaks to the same truth.

In 1981, the State of Israel faced a grave threat from Iraq. Saddam Hussein was building a nuclear reactor at Osirak, and it was clear to Israeli intelligence that his goal was to develop a nuclear weapon. The international community largely ignored the threat, but Israel could not afford to wait. Prime Minister Menachem Begin made the bold and difficult decision to send Israeli fighter jets to bomb the reactor.

Israel was condemned by much of the world. The operation was seen as aggressive and unnecessary. Yet a decade later, as the Gulf War unfolded and Saddam launched missiles into Israel, the same world leaders began to realize that Israel had been right all along.

What is often forgotten about that moment is where Prime Minister Begin made the announcement. He spoke at the Western Wall, to a gathering of Holocaust survivors who were in Israel for a large reunion. Some of them had not seen family members in decades. Others had believed they were the only ones who had made it out alive. It was a powerful and emotional gathering.

Begin’s message to them was simple: never again. He reminded them that if anyone rises and declares their intention to destroy the Jewish people, Israel will act. We will not wait for the world to catch up. We will defend ourselves first. This is what “never again” truly means.

Praying at the Western Wall

On Thursday night, just before the attack, the Prime Minister of Israel visited the Western Wall. We knew he was coming because of the extra security placed in the Aish building, which overlooks the Kotel. It was not a typical visit. It was deeply intentional.

I tweeted at the time that I hoped he would find solace and inspiration in that sacred place. What I did not know then was that he had come to pray because, even with the best intelligence, planning, and execution, something more is necessary. They require God’s help.

That is the truth that unites all of our stories – biblical, historical, and modern. We are a people that do what we must, guided by faith in something greater.

We are a people that stood together at the edge of the Jordan and declared we would not leave the land until our brothers were safe. We are a people that bombed a nuclear facility in Iraq because we believed that waiting was not an option. We are a people that turned off our phones on Shabbat, knowing that missiles were in the air, and placed our trust in the Almighty.

We are a people that stands together. Always.

This is a time to embrace who we are. A time to remember that we are not alone.

And this is not just about Israel. This is about Jews and non-Jews alike. Israel is standing between the free world and a nuclear weapon in the hands of murderous tyrants.

To all of our friends, Jewish and non-Jewish, we are grateful for your prayers and your support. To my fellow Jews across the world, stand tall. Stand proud. This is not a time for fear or shame. This is a time to embrace who we are. A time to remember that we are not alone. We are a family, and we are not going anywhere. Our connection to the land of Israel is not recent, not political, it is ancestral. Jews, indigenous to this land, have been for 3500 years. We will be in Israel for many more glorious years to come.

We have the Almighty. We have the IDF. We have each other. This is a fight between good and evil, and we know where we stand.

Am Yisrael Chai.

Truly an excellent article.
Everything that happens to the Jewish People is in the Hands of God.

There are no coincidences, only miracles.

It’s the Almighty, who was and is behind the victories of the Jews. Let us glorify Him above all and look not ourselves as great in anything. IT WAS HIM ALL ALONG.

Very nice article. Thank you! Just one thought on the point that "Israel has two essential assets that protect her..." i.e. the IDF and (2nd) the Almighty" . Would it not be more fitting FIRST to mention the Almighty and then the IDF? Yes it's true that at first glance, thinking in terms of the five senses, one sees somewhat more tangibly the IDF. But with the truth of the Almighty on one's spiritual radar (the "sixth sense" of sorts), it's obvious that He comes first. I think the message of the article would still have been as poignant even if the mention of G-d had been kept in the forefront. But perhaps the author had another consideration in mind prompting him to write it this way...? I'd be interested to hear his thoughts on the matter. Thank you again.

Even though the government of Iran is against Jews and Israel, the regular population of Iran I read someplace try to have secret connections to Jews and Israel, even the prime minister of Israel said " we have nothing against the regular population of Iran" actually the Iran population doesn't not like this government and want a government like it used to be like the Shah of Iran, which was not radical Islam if they( Iran)have G_d forbid nukes not only Israel would be wiped out but the whole world too, before this happened with Iran recently Menechem Begin had the same problem with Iraq they also wanted nukes, so I think it was Ilan Ramon( obm) that took out their nukes, first the world was upset and then later on was happy Israel did the job, to protect the whole world

Judy, Shalom, Also, I believe, that HaShem honors all those who obey the commandment to join Him on Shabbat. Nowadays there are Jews and non Jews who are honoring this commandment, Baruch HaShem!

In ancient times the country of Iran was known as Persia, so nothing changed much since then first Haman tried to destroy the Jews and Mordechi and Esther saved the Jews with Hashem's help, in now Iran that still have the tomb of Mordechi and Esther

Very well said. Have to say being a Torah observant Jew here in America along with so many Christians, especially evangelical, and MAGA movement like to believe most are very Pro-Israel and agree with what Israel-IDF just did. For me, awesome first stage IDF- Israel protectors of western civilization. The world should being say thank you, but not. There is a fringe of Jew hatred of vile comments where America should cut ties with Israel, Israel is the problem and a liability to America financially, anyone who is Pro-Israel waves the Israeli flag should leave America. Again, believe it is fringe-faction but could increase, hopefully not, among Christians and MAGA is something being addressed now. Rest assured.

It is important to note that in this case, the radical followers of Islam are against Christians as well as Jews. In fact Christians are more dangerous to them, because Christianity has over a Billion people who claim to be CHRISTAINS. Jews, maybe ten million at the most. The Jews must join with their CHRISTAIN brothers and sisters if they want to defeat and be protected from the followers of radical Islam.

For many years I have frequently dropped in on the Aish Western Wall Camera. I have found great comfort in the sight of so many gathered there to pray, for it was never deserted even in the latest hours of the night. It seems so strange to see it empty now. I hope that people will be able to return to the Wall soon to offer thanks for victory and those of us who cannot be there in person will certainly be there in our hearts. Stay safe and do not be afraid.

I stand with Israel, but I am confused by the lede: Israel attacked Iran first and Iran is responding. The PM surely expected that.

Fair. But Israel attacked Iran first because Iran was on the verge of completing a nuclear weapon that could wipe out the country.

Iran would do more then wipe out G_d forbid Israel they would wipe out the whole world, the only country that knows the consequences of Iran G_d forbid is Israel and the Jews

Shalom, the USA also knows the consequences, so it is the reason why our President Donald Trump decided to get in with Israel and sent the help needed. HaShem is definitely fighting this war with and for Israel and will be victorious, giving the victory to His INHERITANCE as HE calls HIS people, my people.

Actually, Iran started with Israel by sending terrorist proxies Hamas, Hasballah, and Houtis to terrorize Israel, which was the tentacles of Iran now Israel hit the head of the octopus called Iran, the whole incident started on October 7, 2023 when Hamas made a mini Holocaust in Israel so this is going on for two years don't be confused because technically what I am saying are the hard facts, in my Jewish Press article about the war diaries Barabra Diamond says about the tentacles and the head of the octopus is Iran

Rabbi :Excellent piece. It’s worthwhile to note that Prime Minister Began also said at the same holocaust conference at the Western wall at the West wall that nobody has mentioned God, and in any of their speeches buythat he believes in God more after the holocaust and he did before. He said Rommel and his German army were almost at the edge of Israel and there were 600,000 Jews in Israel to slaughter at the time. Why didn’t he continue? It’s only because of God stopped him. Period.

The British army helped. Rommel was a career German officer who had no interest in the “Final Solution”, so marching into Mandate Palestine (as it was called then) was not on his agenda.

As I heard the first news of the attack and the multiple requests for tehillim last Thursday night, the words from the parsha, "Arise, HaShem, may Your enemies be scattered and may Your foes flee before You!" immediately came to my mind; however, I didn't realize the sequence of events that night -- the initial visit to the Kotel! May HaShem continue to guide, protect and unity our people!

in 2021, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, after two major hurricanes damaged both the Jewish Temple Sinai, as well as many Christian churches, to me, glorious events took place. Not only did Roman Catholics use Baptist churches for funerals and worship, an Episcopal Church where i was helping out invited Rabbi Barry Weinstein and the local Jewish community to use our facilities for Shabbat. Not only that, Rabbi Barrry used the sanctuary for a funeral service for a well known Jewish lady who was in charge of the nursing program at McNeese State University. This was also at a time when the temple in Dallas was going through an assault of some kind i don't exactly recall. I told Rabbi Barry what we are doing in this little known section of the world is a story to be told elsewhere.

Beautifully said. As I read it, I could not help but think that the exact opposite is happening in the U.S. Israel is fighting to make sure another Holocaust doesn't ensue; the U.S. is divided and inviting dictatorship. God is central in Israel, yet is being used to achieve an objective in the states. The stranger in Israel is met with kindness while in the states he is treated like rubbish. God bless Israel with His Truth!

Israel is protecting the world from G_ D forbid a Nuclear Holocaust, Israel is not only in danger but if Iran gets G _D forbid nukes the will destroy the whole world, and Israel is watching out for themselves and the world, because Israel is protecting everyone because Israel knows you can't trust Iran with Nukes. look what they are doing with regular weapons , and the Prime Minister of Israel said so, exactly more or less what I am writing here
