Lachmagine is a tangy Syrian meat pizza typically served as a mini pizza appetizer. While traditional whole wheat lachmagine doughs are sometimes available at Syrian groceries, using mini whole wheat pitas makes these much easier to prepare at home, no specialty dough required!
The signature tang in lachmagine comes from tamarind sauce, known as tamerhindi, which can be found at many Middle Eastern or Indian markets or online. If tamarind isn’t available, try pomegranate molasses or prune butter with a squeeze of lemon for a similar sweet-tart flavor.
Tamarind isn’t just tasty; it’s packed with health benefits, reducing inflammation, aiding digestion, and supporting skin health. For a vegetarian twist you can use veggie ground beef or simply swap the meat for a mix of grated cauliflower and mushrooms.
