Childbirth Offering

Tazria (Leviticus 12-13 )

by Yoram and Meira Raanan

"Childbirgh" 2016, acrylic on canvas, 120 x 160 cm.

Giving birth is the most powerful encounter between body and soul. After childbirth, the mother brings offerings of a lamb and two birds to the Kohen. In this painting, the two translucent figures emerge from a simple background. Painted in blue, the woman reflects the sky, suggesting the purification of her body after birth. In contrast, the Kohen is painted red, reminiscent of earth and blood and the substantiality of the world. They both share a harmony in purple, which is a combination of red and blue.
