Three Things Every Jew Needs to Hear at the Seder This Year

After Cain killed his brother Abel and God punished him with exile, Cain feared that anyone who met him would kill him. God responded by placing a sign on Cain, warning others not to harm him. What exactly was this sign?
There are actually a lot of interesting theories as to exactly what sign God gave Cain to protect him. I list several of them below, beginning with the earliest sources, appearing in the Midrash.
I’ll conclude by offering a fascinating thought on one of the more interesting explanations cited above – that God provided Cain with a dog. This is possibly the first instance of what was to be the perpetual relationship between man and dog. Ever since Cain was given a pet dog, the dog has become man’s perennial “best friend.”
The great 19th-20th century sage known as the Chofetz Chaim asks further: Why specifically did God provide Cain with a dog? Because we know how faithful and devoted dogs are to their masters. Since the master feeds and cares for his dog, it is grateful and loyal to him to the end. And that is exactly where Cain failed. The Midrash (Bereishis Rabbah 22:8) explains that when Cain first attacked Abel, Abel overpowered him. Cain begged him to spare his life, and he did. And then Cain turned around and killed Abel. He thus demonstrated terrible ingratitude – killing the very man who had just spared his own life. God therefore gave Cain a devoted pet dog – as a constant reminder of the great importance of gratitude.
