After Cain killed his brother Abel and God punished him with exile, Cain feared that anyone who met him would kill him. God responded by placing a sign on Cain, warning others not to harm him. What exactly was this sign?

The Aish Rabbi Replies

There are actually a lot of interesting theories as to exactly what sign God gave Cain to protect him. I list several of them below, beginning with the earliest sources, appearing in the Midrash.

  • God made a sunbeam shine on Cain wherever he went as a Divine warning that no creature should harm him. Alternatively, since he was sinful, God made him stand out in a less complimentary manner – through leprosy (tza’ra’at) – a white area on his skin, a sign of sinfulness which likewise set him apart from others (Bereishit Rabbah 22:12). (See here for a discussion of tza’ra’at.)
  • God gave him a dog for his protection (ibid.). (I.e., the fact that a dog always accompanied him served as a sign to others that God was now looking after him.)
  • God made a horn grow on him (ibid.).
  • God had Cain circumcised (Tikkunei Zohar 118a). Since circumcision is the sign of an eternal bond with God, it naturally afforded Cain protection against all threats.
  • God placed a letter of His name on Cain’s forehead (Targum Yonatan, Rashi). Tikkunei Zohar (118b) writes that He wrote the letter vuv (ו).
  • There was no physical sign, but God made Cain naturally less fearful – which in itself served as a Divine sign that he had no need to fear (Ibn Ezra citing others, Radak).
  • God gave Cain ongoing Divine signs exactly where he should go in his travels, enabling him to avoid danger (now that he was fated to wander all his days; Ramban). Ramban further explains that that may have been the purpose of the dog which the Midrash above says God provided him. The dog would lead him along safe routes.

I’ll conclude by offering a fascinating thought on one of the more interesting explanations cited above – that God provided Cain with a dog. This is possibly the first instance of what was to be the perpetual relationship between man and dog. Ever since Cain was given a pet dog, the dog has become man’s perennial “best friend.”

The great 19th-20th century sage known as the Chofetz Chaim asks further: Why specifically did God provide Cain with a dog? Because we know how faithful and devoted dogs are to their masters. Since the master feeds and cares for his dog, it is grateful and loyal to him to the end. And that is exactly where Cain failed. The Midrash (Bereishis Rabbah 22:8) explains that when Cain first attacked Abel, Abel overpowered him. Cain begged him to spare his life, and he did. And then Cain turned around and killed Abel. He thus demonstrated terrible ingratitude – killing the very man who had just spared his own life. God therefore gave Cain a devoted pet dog – as a constant reminder of the great importance of gratitude.
