This beautiful challah is the perfect centerpiece for your holiday table, symbolizing not only the delicious food we share, but also the unity and strength of the Jewish people. So preheat your oven and get ready to bake a challah that's as delicious as it is meaningful!

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour 500 g
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup neutral oil
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 ¼ cup water
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon silan

Instructions

  • In a large bowl or mixer combine flour, yeast, salt, oil, sugar and water. Knead 10 minutes.
  • Let the dough rise until it doubles in volume for about an hour.
  • Divide into 18 balls of about 1 ½ ounces or 45 grams each.
  • Roll each ball into a strip and braid 6 3-strand braids.
  • On a large sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Layer the thin braids in the shape of the Star of David.
  • Let rise for about 40-45 minutes.
  • In a small bowl beat egg with a bit of silan. Brush egg mixture over the challah.
  • Preheat oven to 375℉/190℃ degrees and bake for about 20-25 minutes until brown.
