Jews Who Support Mamdani

As some Jews rally behind Mamdani despite his anti-Israel rhetoric, we’re reminded of Abraham’s legacy—to stand boldly for truth while still reaching out with love to our own.

In the last week, more videos have emerged demonstrating New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s obsessive hatred of Israel.  During a panel at the 2023 Democratic Socialists of America’s national convention, he said, “We have to make clear that when the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it’s been laced by the IDF.”   Additionally, in an effort to blame the problems of his city on Israel, he said, “You have so many opportunities to make clear the ways in which that struggle over there (Israel), is tied to capitalists interests over here.”

He has defended suicide bombers as soldiers, repeatedly refused to condemn the violent and threatening phrase, “Globalize the Intifada,” falsely accused Israel of genocide, and announced he would attempt to have Prime Minister Netanyahu arrested as a war criminal if he came to New York.  His hateful preoccupation with Israel has been well documented and rises to the level that many Jews in New York are concerned they will be less safe if he wins.

Recognizing the danger, over 1,000 rabbis signed a letter opposing Mamdani. Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove of the Conservative Upper East Side Park Avenue Synagogue gave a sermon that went viral in which he said,  “To be clear, unequivocal, and on the record: I believe Zohran Mamdani poses a danger to the New York Jewish community.”

And yet, despite what should be obvious, polls ranging from as high as 43% (and on the low end, 21%) show that Jewish voters in New York intend to vote for him.  Prominent Jewish actors and media personalities have unabashedly endorsed Mamdani. This week, a campaign video produced in partnership with the organization "Jews for Racial and Economic Justice" was released, which includes four self-described rabbis expressing open support for Mamdani.

In the best case scenario, these Jewish poll responders, celebrities and these rabbis seem to be putting their liberalism and progressivism ahead of their Jewish identity and loyalty to Israel.  They are prioritizing being part of a socialist movement over the safety and preservation of their own families and their people. In the worst case scenario, they are not making a choice between two things (progressive politics and Jewish identity) they embrace, rather they substituting one for the other, rejecting their Jewish identities. Either way, it is deeply troubling.

Standing Strong

This segment of our people failed to learn the lesson of Abraham, who is referred to as Ha’Iviri.  While the literal translation means Abraham “the Hebrew,” our rabbis share another layer of interpretation. Ha’ivri meanis mei’eiver, on the other side.  When the whole world took one position and stood on one side, Abraham had the courage to stand out, remain true to the vision and to the will of the Almighty.  He had the courage and confidence to stand on the other side, even if it meant standing alone.

This mayoral election is hardly the first time members of our people chose to stand with their own haters.  Nor did this behavior begin with the many Jews who tragically donned keffiyehs and spent two years protesting against Israel’s right to defend itself. When after over two centuries of slavery and persecution, our people were redeemed from Egypt, the Torah tells us that 80% stayed behind, wanted to remain part of the very society and culture that had oppressed them.   They chose to stay attached to their oppressors, comfortable in their captivity, unwilling to walk toward freedom.

Standing Together

It’s hard not to look at those Jews for Mamdani, look at Jews who join “Free Palestine” rallies, and be disheartened and say, “This is our generations 80%.  They are choosing Egypt over Israel, Socialism over Judaism, they are irredeemable and hopeless.”  But that would be to neglect another part of Abraham’s legacy.

Abraham didn’t just stand apart, he also reached back. When his nephew Lot, who had already parted ways with Abraham, was taken captive, the Torah describes Lot as achiv, Abraham’s brother, even though Lot was not actually his brother. Abraham didn’t say, “Lot made his bed, let him lie in it.” He didn’t cancel him, mock him, or write him off. He felt the responsibility to his brother and went to rescue him.

Abraham teaches us that being on the other side doesn’t mean turning our backs. It means standing strong for what’s right while still extending a hand to bring others along.

And maybe as this election approaches, that is a lesson for us. We have to follow Avraham Ha’Ivri and stand proudly, courageously, on the side of Judaism, of Israel, of truth. But we also have to be like Abraham the uncle—the brother—the one who never gives up on family.

Those Jews supporting Mamdani are still part of our family. They are misguided, confused, maybe even lost, but they are ours. The goal isn’t to shame or scorn them; it’s to love them back into the light. We can disagree deeply while still caring deeply. We can hold firm to our principles without hardening our hearts.

Abraham teaches us that being on the other side doesn’t mean turning our backs. It means standing strong for what’s right while still extending a hand to bring others along.

That’s our challenge, and that’s our calling, to stand where Abraham stood, with unrelenting conviction in one hand but compassion in the other.

Jews who support Mamdani forfeit their birthright to call themselves Jews. This man supports Hamas and the October 7th massacres. Mamdani and his fellow musilms want to "finish the job Hitler started" and they don't care what you believe. Mein Kampf is a best seller in arabic - well actually it is a religious text for muslims that they put next to the equally vile hate filled Quran. Hitler didn't care what Jews believed - he just murdered them all. They hate Jews and non-muslims. Mamdani is evil.

I will not have anything to do with any Jew that supported Mamdani any more than a Kapo that worked with Hitler. I am a survivor of terrorism. I spent the last 2 years praying for hostages held by Hamas. Hashem should avenge the blood of our martyrs including our Jewish enemies.

tell me you're Jewish in name only without telling me. Why is it that the people that truly practice and study the religion understand the connection between Israel and Judaism. If you are not as affiliated, then wouldn't you know instinctively to defer and be humble to the people that know more?

Interesting. The "A" word (Aliyah, for those who couldn't guess) is mentioned twice in the comments, but not even once in the article itself. Tells me quite a bit about the mindset of the so-called "American Jewry". Sad...

A good article with excellent following comments about this looming catastrophe, where an antisemite will be elected (barring a miracle) mayor of New York. I agree that failure by the sclerotic Democrats to address issues like affordable housing and inequality of opportunity have led to desperation and Mamdani. One correction, however, The claim that 80% of Jews stayed behind in Egypt is hotly debated and appears in the Midrash. It is in the Midrash with an interpretation of Exodus 13:18 of the word chamushim (חֲמֻשִׁים), meaning “armed,” but interpreted as “one-fifth” in by some sages.

The problem here is far more than the guy’s opinion of Israel. This is civilizational: Islam is making a rapid ascent in America based on a decades old plan devised in the wake of 9-11. 10-7 was very much part of the plan and stupid israeli leftists—played like children by the Muslim Brotherhood—are very much part of the plan. Similarly, leftist American Jews weakened America and opened the doors for Islam (and everyone else) in 1965. Indeed, Muslim actions towards America and Israel are timed to coincide with Jewish demographics: the 2001 NJPS was a very precise timing mechanism guiding Muslim advances into Western power structures. Were definitely our own misfortune.

Sorry, Lot's original decision did not put Avraham in danger. Sure there was a turn of events that led to Avraham putting his life on the line for Lot. But this situation is very different. These Jews are putting the lives of otherJews in danger. This is not a time to declare our love for them but to reject them outright before they hurt us and them.

I'm not Jewish, I am Christian and I find it absolutely astonishing that Jews or Christians would vote for this guy. If you care at all about future generations on this beautiful land, and the preservation of our civilized culture which includes free speech and autonomy should not consider for 1 second to vote for this person. Discerning minds must prevail.

You're right, except that you and most people posting here are ignoring what the appeal is. People are desperate to follow anyone who promises to do something about the ever-widening wealth gap that is most apparent in places like NYC. Have other candidates even acknowledged that the problems are real?

Let's not be so surprised by the populism that has kicked into overdrive on both the left and the right.

ADS - If you study the bible. That GAP of WEALTH - has existed since creation - & is obtusely shown - in the Bible. And - it still exists today. The gap - fluctuates - depending upon the rise & fall - of the political power - & of the current population. Yet it's reported that - now - more than ever - there are more millionaires & billionaires - than before. One difference exists. Where democracy exists - the common man - has a chance - & could become wealthy. In Non-democracies - only those who hold the power - are rich.

The reason the bible talks about wealth, is the people that are rich should give the Jewish version of charity to the less fortunate, actually according to Judaism a person should give 10% of income and if you are very rich then more of a percentage, that is how the system works in the Torah( the Jewish Bible) how I learned it, also in the 7th year of not growing things it is free for the poor to take it, this behavior is taught in the Jewish bible to protect the so called underdogs of society, so why are Jews turning to a fake system of government called communism, it is against the Jewish bible teachings, the rich should share their wealth just like upis says in the Jewish bible teachings

Judy - G-D's Written Torah does not SPECIFY that - RICH PEOPLE (only) need to give CHARITY. All His Commandments - applies to all Jews to TITHE - & give CHARITY - according to their means & keep all His Commandments - that apply appropriately. Those Jews who turn to Communism - as a way of life/governing themselves - like others - have found a way to incorporate/adapt Jewish & other beliefs/concepts - into almost all facets of life.

When things become impossible for NY Jews, they won't be moving to Israel, they'll be moving to Florida. The exodus of only 20% of the Jews of Egypt in Moses' time who left, and the 80% who preferred to remain in Egypt despite their dire situation, really is a metaphor for our times. Out of the 7.5 million Jews living within the USA, only 2000 made aliyah this year.

The chasidim who vote for mamdani are not Zionists and are unsupportive of the State of Israel. Additionally many are reliant on food stamps, rent control, welfare, medicare and other forms of public assistance, which mamdani aims to increase. They've lived with antisemites and don't consider mamdani anything new. So for them mamdani is the more "logical" choice. One can only pray that they wake up before it's too late.

I wish you would stop pressuring Jews whose life philosophy doesn't align with the alt right politics of Israeli government, and who speak against weaponizing hunger against a civilian population. I am a daughter of a holocaust survivor who suffered years of starvation during the WW2, and I strongly oppose the Netanyahu's strategy to intentionally prevent food from entering Gaza. Furthermore, I oppose vilifying candidate Mamdani for not supporting alt-right government of Israel.
It disturbs me greatly that many Jews abandoned the central concept of Judaism -Tikkun olam, and rather than "repairing of the world" willfully contribute to pain and suffering. I don't buy "we suffer too"! defense, because two wrong don't make one right!

If you are Jewish and have holocaust awareness the minimum you could do is try understand the objective facts and the unfiltered perspective of your own people.

Your "I want all killing to stop" would have worked wonders with Nazi Germany if the allies decided not to invade Europe because two wrongs don't make a right.

It is related in Tenach, when the Jewish nation returned to Israel after 70 years of exile in the times of Ezrah and Nehemia, there was a very strong leftist opposition against rebuilding the temple and building the protective wall around Jerusalem. Very difficult to understand in those days - and very difficult to understand in our days. Bilam expressed it with the words; Hen am kalevi jakum. (bamidbar 23,24) Rashi explains, when the Jewish nation is united as one nation, they are compared to the lion, that no-one consider to attack. However when the Jewish nation is splintered and fragmented, our nation is vulnerable and exposed to danger.

Lot had flaws but he had redeeming features as well. He risked his life by providing hospitality in Sodom. He was the ancestor of King David and of the Moshiach. There were grounds for reaching out to him. On the other hand, Yishmael was and is pure evil and G-d told Avrohom to kick him out. And he did. He has no redeeming feature. And neither do those who favor Yishmael over their own brethren.

Actually, Yshmael is a very good example supporting the Rabbi's point. After Sarah, of blessed memory, passes, Yitzach goes and finds his aunt Hagar to come back to Avraham. His brother Yishmael is so moved by this action, he repents, and he and Hagar, now called Ketores because she has changed as well and has turned into a sweet smell, return to Avraham, and they marry.

I have absolutely ZERO sympathy for the horror the brainwashed idiots of NYC are about to bring upon themselves. The non-Jews are greedy for what they perceive as freebies obtained through no effort, for the freedom to take what they want at will with a reduced police force, and for a general free-for-all. How about some specifics? What exactly do you think you're going to "work on" with him?

How can he pay for all the free stuff he is talking about? Taxing the rich? They will leave if you tax them high enough. Then what? Freeze rents? And when the taxes and utilities still rise, what do you think landlords will do? Will they be able to afford repairs?
Something else to think about. He comes from a rich family. He never held a job before the State Assembly and he has a horrible attendance record. Do you really want an inexperienced person to run this great city?
He is wealthy and still lives in a rent stabilized (soon to be rent frozen if you has his way). Why? He talks about "fair" but is this fair?
Remember the Judenrate also thought they can work with Hitler. They died in the end like their brothers. Something to think about.

Yes! His promise of "free stuff" is nothing more than a lot of hippy dippy nonsense.

Aside from his globalize the intif... chants, etc. I'd like to know your thoughts on a few things including his promised policies.
Why do he live in a rent-controlled apt.? Why does he condemn capitalism when his parents are multimillionaires made via capitalism?

How will his policies be funded and/or resulting affects on citizens? A few examples include: significantly reducing police force, having a community response team respond to 911 calls, $30.00/hr. min. wage, close prisions, have state run grocery stores to name a few.

You've got to be kidding, at least about "intelligent and thoughtful" because it's obvious that Jews for Madmani {this spelling is intentional} are neither!

Intelligent people (Jews as well as gentiles) would want to hear a realistic plan for how this madman intends to realize his radically socialist (so-called utopian) dream.
He's just a slick opportunist who has foxily figured out that if he caters to all the shiftless takers in NY, he's got the majority vote right there!

And how can his clearly antisemitic rantings possibly be interpreted as favorable to the city's sizeable Jewish population?!

Thinkers indeed! Leftist, liberal, self-hating Jews have sold their souls (and brains!) to the devil.

You obviously suffer from TDS and couldn't wait to dig into President Trump - the greatest friend Israel ever had in the White House. The fact that you look forward to embracing an antisemitic Communist who despises Israel says more about you than him.

It seems to me for many Jews who support Mandami support for Israel isn't a priority to them and in truth the mayor of NYC has no role in USA foreign policy. I wouldn't vote for him but I agree with the author who advised us to emulate Abraham and not turn our backs especially as most of these Jews had little meaningful Jewish education. As much if not more difficult to embrace as a valued part of Am Yisrael are the thousands of so called ultra Orthodox men who are out protesting today against doing their share for Israel by either serving in the military or national service.

Do you really think anyone can be so stupid as to publicly protest "doing their share"?
Have you ever thought that perhaps they are doing their share by maintaining the Jewish character of the Jewish state as they keep the core of our religion alive?

Our people exist despite all the horrors we've endured throughout the ages by virtue of our sustained Torah learning!
Yes, of course we need a strong IDF; that's our hishtadlus, but never forget that Torah is our essence. It's Torah observance that sets us apart and makes us worthy of Hashem's eternal protection.

Don't be taken in by the leftist Israeli media; find out why the Orthodox population cannot serve in the anti-religious IDF, which has a hidden agenda.

These are the Jews that help foster anti-semitism. Some things cannot be forgiven. How do you expect non-Jews to respect us? The damage that these losers are dong to our people in incalculable.

Even Lot, as mistaken as he was, didn’t try to inflict injury on Jews, rather, he was welcoming to those venturing into his town. Even Lot didn’t disclose Sara’s secret to the Egyptian authories, rather protected his family and fellow Jew. This is why Abraham risked his life to save him. These self describing “Rabbis”, and self hating Jews do not care in the least for their fellow Jew (or G-d forbid Israeli), and as such are undeserving of our empathy.

Disagree completely on how to deal with these traitors. We should be calling them out, we should be shaming them, we should be fighting them in the same way that we fight those who seek to destroy us. Save the compassion and kindness for the victims and not the enemy in sheeps clothing.

I can’t do that, Rabbi. I have tried, especially in the wake of Oct 7th, to love every Jew. Even the most despicable of our brothers and sisters, who decry the state of Israel and promote Jew-haters/hatred around the globe with their $, words and actions.
I have tried to not allow anger and hate towards them overtake me.

But, it is impossible. I reject them. They are lost, irredeemably lost. Their actions endanger all of us, Jew and non-Jew, who choose LIFE! Who do not back up those who choose DEATH, by siding with the worst kind of terror—Hamas, Hezbollah, etc.

Linda Sarsour will gain if he wins. Do you believe in equality of opportunity or equality of outcome Think about it . Thanks for sharing what you did here .

There are not equality of outcome you could have equality of opportunity but not the outcome, some people are lazy and dont work with the same empowerment, commitment and sacrifice but expect to get the same reward for doing nothing, thats non sense, and the tragedies of the jews have being started by themselves when they betrayed their own people like they are doing in nyc with mandami

While the vast majority of German Jews opposed and did not vote for Hitler, a small, highly assimilated group of German Jews did.
This small minority consisted of members of the Verband nationaldeutscher Juden (Association of German National Jews), a fringe group led by Max Naumann that advocated for the full assimilation of Jews into German society and held strong German nationalist views. This group miscalculated, believing that Hitler's antisemitism was a political tactic rather than a core belief. Once in power, Hitler banned their organization in 1935, and its leader was arrested. German Jews, including those who had supported nationalist parties, were progressively stripped of their rights, persecuted, and ultimately targeted for extermination during the Holocaust.
