Max Greenfield is a rescuer.

Jewish actor Max Greenfield may know how to blow a shofar, and had a unique bar mitzvah, but with a busy family life and career, he hasn’t been able to get to a synagogue as often as he would like!

“I am probably not as active in the temple as I should be!” he quipped on the red carpet for Wags and Walks' 12th annual benefit Auction & Gala, which helps raise money for the Los Angeles-based animal rescue. The popular actor/children’s book author, known for his popular shows, CBS’ “The Neighborhood” and FOX’s “The New Girl,” thoroughly enjoyed hosting the event, which raised thousands of dollars.

“It is wonderful to come together like this and raise much needed funding with dozens of compassionate animal lovers!” he enthused. “I would do anything for this charity,” Greenfield told Jewlish.com.

“The job they do is so incredible. I adopted three dogs from them. We started with Joey, who sadly, is no longer with us. Then we got Roxy and Darlene. They have added so much to our lives.”

Earlier this year, Greenfield and his wife fell in love with Darlene, who had been looking for a home for months. “Darlene is a million-dollar dog. We knew she was the one the first day we brought her home! She is really so special.”

“There are so many homeless dogs and cats in need of homes, and I am so glad that we were able to contribute to this worthwhile charity. I encourage everyone to adopt from your local shelter,” Greenfield enthused.

Recently, the actor and his wife hosted some of their celebrity friends for a Furry Friendsgiving brunch. The gathering was in celebration of Ollie fresh dog food, which just launched at Petco stores. In the spirit of giving, the company made a donation on behalf of all guests to the rescue. The veteran comedian also thoroughly adores cooking for his pets too.

“I cook for them all the time! And then I started to realize there are all these great companies that make really incredible food that’s already pre-cooked! So I buy that a lot! But there have definitely been moments where I was cooking! Every once in a while, I will pick up some veggies at the market and veggie bacon and cook that up for them, as a topper!”

During the pandemic, Greenfield created an award-winning veggie burger recipe.

“I’ve gotten way better at cooking in quarantine,” he told Fatherly. “I’ve expanded my repertoire of dishes. But I will say, the Lightlife Burger Showdown, was, I have to say, such a cool thing that they did. I was so happy and excited to be a part of it. We, people like myself, got paired with different restaurants across the nation. I got Busy Burger in Chicago, and me and the chef got to sit down and talk over Zoom and discuss what type of burger we were going to make for this competition. All the proceeds went to Feeding America and the restaurant industry. In a time when there’s an industry that has been hit so deeply hard by all of this, I just thought it was the coolest idea.”

Sadly, Greenfield acknowledged that he wasn’t the greatest cook!

“It’s just embarrassing!” he quipped. “I’ve been able to make cereal in the morning! If I can get past that, then I am doing all right! I’m a big fan of challah bread, you can turn it into great French toast in the morning! And I love Jewish deli!”
