The Quiet Erasure of Jewish Artists in America

10 min read
After Oct. 7, things have changed dramatically for the seven million Jews who call the United States their home.
With over 3500 years of continuous existence as a people, it’s hard to point to any specific moment in Jewish history and say, “this is unique:” as the Biblical idiom has it, “nothing is new under the sun.” Yet with the anniversary of the horrific attack by Hamas on southern Israel fast approaching, things have changed dramatically for the seven million Jews who call the United States their home.
American Jews, especially those who to migrated to these shores after the pogroms in late nineteenth-century Russian Empire, frequently voiced the notion that the United States was “The Golden Land,” with democratic values that relegated the medieval antipathy to Jews firmly in the distant past. Jews reciprocated to the newfound freedoms by contributing to American society on a scale vastly disproportionate to their tiny percentage of the population, which barely broke two percent. Access to higher education, freedom from antisemitic restrictions in business, and a general environment of democratic opportunity allowed Jews to give back to society by developing science (over 100 Nobel laureates), culture (Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, Columbia Pictures), and the economy (Google, Facebook, Starbucks, just to name a few).
Jews loved America, and for the most part the appreciation was mutual. This was especially true for the second half of the twentieth century, when the Greatest Generation liberated the Nazi Death camps. The apple-cheeked young soldiers from Idaho, who may never have met a single Jew in their lives, suddenly came face-to-face with the darkest implications of Jew-hatred.
Hearts expanding with compassion and sympathy, the post-war generation entered into a profound period of philosemitism, as average Americans saw Jewish history the way most Jews understand it: a long existential struggle for survival in hostile environments, culminating in the event that literally gave the world the word “genocide,” coined by a Polish-American Jew named Raphael Lemkin, seeking a way to describe an act of such heinous enormity that no existing vocabulary could contain it. When the bedraggled survivors of the Holocaust joined with the older Jewish community to establish the State of Israel in 1948, successfully defending the old-new land against an invasion of five Arab armies, Americans cheered.
Sadly, that honeymoon era seems to be ending. Recent polling indicates a profound split between younger and older Americans: while less than 10% those over 55 support Hamas in its conflict with Israel, fully 41% of Americans aged 18-24 identify, amazingly, with the terrorist organization. We certainly see the reflection of this generation gap on many college campuses, where it is no longer unfashionable to voice vulgar Jew-hatred in public. Israel, as a modern nation-state, is not exempt from criticism, and in fact dissent from its policies and politicians is a lively part of the vigorous Israeli democracy. The selective outrage of these young critics, however, and the glaring double standard applied to America’s ally is often indicative of an undercurrent of simple antisemitism.
In every occasion, Jewish communities have found ways to rebound, often remarkably so, from devastating tragedies.
So wither American Jewry, as the cultural mood of the youth of this country, once so welcoming to the Jewish people, seems to be heading in a darker direction? Jews of the United States can look to the past for historical precedents, many of which may yield new strategies to survive the current challenges. The Crusades ravaged the Ashkenazic heartland in the 11th century, but sages such as the famous Bible commentator Rashi devised legal innovations to rebuild the shattered communities.
Regime change a century later in Spain ended the idyllic period known as La Convivencia (“the coexistence”) and drove the family of Maimonides from their ancestral home, but the great philosopher was able to replant the family in Cairo, establishing a dynasty of leadership that cared for Jewish minorities throughout the Mediterranean basin for centuries.
The seventeenth-century peasant uprising under Bohdan Khmelnitsky drove tens of thousands of Jewish refugees to western Europe, but economic and communal restructuring allowed the Jews of Ukraine to rebound to their previous population numbers.
In every occasion, Jewish communities have found ways to rebound, often remarkably so, from devastating tragedies. The current expression of hostility emanating from some circles of American youth might not bode well for the Jewish vision of the United States as “the Golden Land,” but historical experience suggests that the energetic, ebullient and enthusiastic Jewish minority will find new ways to adapt. As the Hebrew expression goes, Am Yisrael chai—the Jewish people live.

“while less than 10% those over 55 support Hamas in its conflicts with Israel, fully 41% of Americans aged 18-24 identify, amazingly, with the terrorist organization.“ So where are the parents “teaching” their children? While they are NOT teaching, the kids are left with social media and a derelict media to fill in the blanks. Sadly they are too immersed in their own lives to properly raise their children with a moral compass. Praying for a new America to change all that for the better.
I think it's always been a problem here in the US. Just more emboldened now. I suspect social media and internet anonymity is a big part of it; people are voicing hatred a lot more now in general. Many Americans think nothing of saying truly vile things online that they'd never had said in public 10+ years ago.
The truth is allways harsh. Am Yisrael Chai
I remember Rabbi Meir Kahane(obm) said this was coming in the 1970s/1980s and now the worst is here, when Jews unfortunately voted for Obama that was the beginning of the decline of America and he gave a lot of money to Iran, and did something to mess with Israel, my mom( obm) said something that I have a very bad feeling about Obama, since then Biden and if G_d forbid Harris wins America and Israel will have lots of problems, and the world can be in danger too
Rabbi Kahane spoke at my school. He was trying to teach a bunch of schoolgirls about antisemitism in America. Suddenly out of nowhere a couple of kids bashed the windows with a mop handle. Rabbi Kahane and the principal chased the boys but couldn’t catch them. A lot of my friends were children of holocaust survivors. One girl was hysterical. And when Rabbi Kahane came back, he said what happened was a better lesson of what he was saying
Sadly, more evidence to support how the educational system has failed to educate and teach accurate history and how to think. Antisemitism is on the rise.
I posted on the NextDoor app yesterday, calling for a moment of silence and reflection for those affected by October 7th and for spiritual support for our local Jewish friends and neighbors.
It quickly sank into a diatribe of blame; I was suspended from the site for 30 days (I'm not returning, deleted my account) and the post was removed. It was titled, L'Chaim ISREAL". A moderator told me I should never mention ISREAL on the site.
I am of Jewish ancestry. I will not be silenced or intimidated. Silence=complicity.
L'Chaim ISREAL
I am your ally, peace for the Jewish people.

May HaShem keep and bless the Americans far away from us.
Great article. But people should realize that a major cause of antiSemitism today is the massive immigration into America, fully supported by the major mainline Jewish organizations, of groups of people who do not like Jews. If you mention that, you get called a bigot, a xenophobe, a racist. But it's a fact.
The Anti-Defamation League reported more than 10,000 antisemitic incidents in the U.S. in the last year. This is the highest one-year number on record and a 200% increase from the same period the year before the attacks occurred.
The antisemites in the US are emboldened because the Biden-Harris administration has done nothing to stop the unprotected HATE speech. The Biden-Harris administration does not want to offend the important Arab and Palestinian population in the State of Michigan, a state Harris must carry in November.
So Harris panders to the antisemites and ignores the government of Israel while Israel fights to eliminate Hezbollah and Hamas, tbose committed to wiping off every Jew from the face of the earth.
Yet American Jews continue to support feckless Kamala Harris.
Goes to show how crazy it has become. Am Yisrael Chai.
Jews tend to vote to preserve their misguided notions of position and control. It was the influential Jewish community that opposed the admission of Jewish refugees from the Holocaust into America.I am Jewish born and raised in Argentina and I never fully liked the majority of American Jews.I was right!!
I think the vast majority of Americand support Israel and the Jewish people. the antisemitism in colleges and univerities mudt be rooted out before it pollutes more youg minds.
However, the Jewish people in the US must speak up! Their silence is deafening, except for a few brave students. I do not understand the silence. And I do not understand why the Jewish community continues to stand by the Democrat Party which is full of antisemites! It is the Republican Party that supports Israel and the Jewish People without reservation or equivocation. I am baffled by it -- supporting the party that supports students who chant “Death to Israel, Death to the USA, From the River to the Sea,” etc. It is unbelievable.
Amen
Wake up America ,look at the reality of the events, remove the blinders and learn to shoot
Wake up, Jews! The honeymoon is over. This election is more important than ever. It’s about existence! The Dems are no longer our friends! Consider Trump for the next 4 years and swallow the bullet lest it will get all of us!
Come to Australia, we have always been welcoming and nurturing of Jews here. Search for yourselves, Jews are and have been chosen and thrived in all levels of business, government, law, academia, science, medicine and the arts. Our most famous and revered WW1 military leader was General Sir John Monash, GCMG, KCB, VD
No thanks.
It’s my understanding that immigration to Australia is not possible unless one has an extraordinary ability or is very wealthy.
Antisemitism in many Universities in the US is NOT NEW. It was around when I went to university in the early 1980's. It was around when my children went to University 5 to 10 years ago. It will probably still be around when my 2 year old grandson goes to University. It was also around when my mother went to UCLA, the same university I went to but she went in the early 1950's. Even though historically the US has been a Jew tolerant county and because of the survival of the Jewish population in the US, the Jews did NOT become extinct during the sad days of World War II, there are still certain people in the US who are intolerant of Jews. That will probably never go away, but the Jews have a lot to thank the US for.
You are delusional,keep voting democrat.
JPS Kethuvim Ecclesiastes ch.12 : 1 - 13
Honeymoon? Are you delusional? With the antisemitism and Intermarriage (because of Self Hate in the Antisemitic land of America), America has not been a good place for Jews.
I just described how the Jews need to thank the US for their survival. I do NOT know where you get self-hate. I was raised as a Jew and I am proud to be a Jew, even though NOT all of my ancestors were in fact Jews, I am still proud that I grew up Jewish.
So am I,have allways been aĺlthough it have costed me a few beautifully coloured éyes trough the years
Ultimately it will be the US which suffers the most from alienating the Jews. This too is historically demonstrated.
What Jews? There are none left or very little.
Are you going to wait???I pity you
Pray that this does not happen.
Jewish Democrats need to love Israel more than their insane hatred for President Trump. Harris will be much worse than Obama.
And also LOVE God!
Not sure what is wrong with people thinking one person in a party makes it better. Some Democrats are better than republicans and some republicans are better than Democrats, this is why the Majority Democrats have the most support of Jewish people. People I know do not like the Imposter of a President Trump, who wants to take over a Friendly Country, Canada, fight with Mexico, and take over Greenland. Like this is not presidential, saying we will add tariffs to Canada and who ever I like. Well USA cars pricing will go up $2-3,000, a car, and sidings and eaves work about $1.2 000.so is he your kind of President who likes kicking Americans. I am not an American but thanks I would not like to be in USA.
I pray our eyes are wide open to what is and will happen, G-D forbid, if Israel, not protected by every Jewish Soul. Remember, nobody wanted us. If Israel, the Jewish State is gone, The same will happen. Whoever was and is out for Israel, that's the key to our survival. Every Jewish Soul, let's show Ha-shem we join him by saving Israel, a precious gift that he gave us, a place for every Jew to go, before it's too late. TD
I am a non-Jewish American citizen who's eyes have been fully opened to the importance of Israel, the Jewish people, and even the Torah and I'm genuinely confused why so many Jews continue to support the American democratic political left. Obama himself handed over billions of dollars to Iran. The Biden administration has given a mere pittance of funding to help Israel defend itself since Oct 7th. Harris refused to be present for Netanyahu’s recent historic speech before Congress. Every day it becomes more evident the democrat party simply no longer supports the Jews. However, what it does support are phantasmagorical hedonistic anti-Torah values. Pornographic books in our grade school libraries? Tax payer funded gender transition surgery for teens?? They have truly gone mad.
You are right, there should be more people like you who see the true facts
Yeah,that's so true.100% gone mad,as the brits say"they've gone 'bunkers',it's crazy".
The honeymoon was merely an illusion. Antisemitism has ALWAYS existed because of Sinat Chinam. The difference between now and the past is the wrapping paper. How many people smiled at us while making an anti Jewish remark? There is nothing new under the sun.
