Even if you’ve never been to a McDonald’s I am sure you have heard of a Big Mac.
The Big Mac is the iconic McDonald’s sandwich sold around the world. The version we have come to know best was popularized by the popular jingle created in 1974, “Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions – on a sesame seed bun.” With this in your head, you will never forget the ingredients.
Clearly, this is not very Jewish, nor is it very kosher, so we decided to make it Jewish for Hanukkah. Instead of two all beef patties, we used Beyond Meat to make 2 smash burgers, and instead of the extra bun in the middle we used a latke.
Ingredients
- 2 freshly fried latkes or reheated
- 1 pound veggie ground meat such as Beyond or Impossible, thawed
- 2 sesame seed burger buns
- Thousand Island dressing
- ¼ cup chopped onion
- ½ cup chopped iceberg lettuce
- Pickle slices
- 2 slices cheese

Instructions
- Divide veggie ground meat into 4 equal portions, and refrigerate until ready to cook.
- When ready to cook, place pan over medium-high heat. Depending on space place 1 or 2 cold pieces of meat onto the hot surface. Working quickly, cover each piece with parchment paper and smash each into a thin patty. Remove parchment paper and flip. Sear for 2 minutes on the first side and about 1 minute on the other side.
- Toast both sides of bun in a pan or in a toaster.
- Assemble the Big Mac. Top the bottom bun with latke. Spread dressing on top of latke and open side of bun. Add onions and lettuce to both sides. Add pickle slices to latke side. Top bun side with a slice of cheese. Place a smash burger on each side. Lift latke with topping and place on other patty. Top with bun.
