A major new study reveals that Hamas grossly overestimates the number of civilians killed to harm Israel’s standing.
This week, news outlets around the world announced that the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 45,000 people with women and children making up the majority of those who were killed. At the same time, a major new study has shown that this figure is untrue.
For over a year, ever since Hamas broke a ceasefire to invade Israel, massacre 1,200 people and take over 250 hostages, news organizations have rushed to defend Hamas’ supposed impartiality and professionalism in reporting casualty figures caused by the very war it began.
No matter that the “Gaza Health Ministry” is an arm of Hamas and has a long history of distorting the truth to fit Hamas propaganda. An example: In 2018, Gaza’s Health Ministry deliberately mis-reported that Israeli troops had killed a baby in Gaza when in fact no such event had taken place. The truth only came out later when the family admitted to journalists that Hamas had pressured them to misrepresent their baby’s death from natural causes as a murder by Israeli soldiers: The Health Ministry went along with the charade.
Gaza’s Health Ministry has covered up Hamas’ own crimes again and again, falsely blaming Hamas brutality on Israelis. In 2019, when Hamas security forces attacked and beat Gazans who were demonstrating against Hamas, Gaza’s Health Ministry covered up Hamas brutality by reporting that there were no injuries. On October 16, 2023, Gaza’s Health Ministry misreported that an Israeli airstrike on Gaza’s al-Ahli Hospital killed 500 people. (In reality, a Hamas missile aimed at Israel malfunctioned and exploded on the ground, killing somewhere between 50 and 300 people at the hospital.)
While Israeli authorities have reported that troops killed over 17,000 Hamas fighters in pitched battles in Gaza, Hamas’ Gaza Health Authority has a policy of never reporting that a single death was of an armed fighter.
Despite these and other distortions, media companies continue to amplify Hamas’ casualty counts. The prestigious French newspaper Le Monde recently ran a headline explaining “Why the Gaza Health Ministry death count is considered reliable,” erroneously asserting: “many experts and media organizations agree that the figures are reliable, and maybe even underestimated.”
Britain’s Henry Jackson Society, a think tank, analyzed the way Hamas’ casualty counts have been amplified by western media in its groundbreaking new report Questionable Counting: Analysing the Death Toll from the Hamas-Run Ministry of Health in Gaza. The results were sobering: 98% of news outlets cited casualty numbers provided by Hamas, versus only 5% which referred to casualty counts released by Israel. 19% of news outlets parroted Hamas casualty numbers without even acknowledging that the data came from Hamas.
84% of Western news outlets didn’t mention that any of the reported dead were Hamas fighters, conveying the wrong impression that all - or at least the vast majority of - casualties were women and children. Only 3% of western news outlets specifically mentioned that some of the people who’ve lost their lives in fighting in Gaza have been armed Hamas militants.
And while half of news outlets publicly questioned data provided by Israel, fewer than 2% of news outlets similarly questioned the veracity of Hamas data.
Hamas’ Gaza Ministry of Health publishes a daily “Martyrs to Date” list of casualties every day. Henry Jackson Society researchers have found that death “figures have been overstated. The data behind their figures contains natural deaths, deaths from before this conflict began and deaths of those killed by Hamas itself; it contains no mention of Hamas combatant fatalities; and it overstates the number of women and children killed.”
The errors the researchers found are legion:
The report concludes that Hamas’ Gaza Ministry of Health data on deaths is “highly inaccurate” and “creates a misleading picture of the conflict.” It also concludes, in a separate tragedy for Gazans, that due to Hamas’ propaganda and lies the true death toll of the current conflict will likely never be known.
Unfortunately, Hamas’ Gaza Ministry of Health’s grossly unreliable figures have created a narrative in which it’s easy to falsely accuse Israel of targeting women and children instead of Hamas fighters.
When Hamas’ propaganda is accepted as fact, it becomes easy to accuse Israel of indiscriminate killing. The head of the British Medical Association has claimed on social media that Israel is conducting a “Holocaust” in Gaza because of the Hamas-reported high death rate there. After Israel shut down its embassy in Ireland on December 15, 2024 to protest Ireland’s attempt to persuade the International Criminal Court to widen its definition of genocide so that it can more easily find Israel guilty of it, Ireland’s leader Simon Harris justified his anti-Israel position by accusing Israel of “killing…children in Gaza” and cited reports of the high civilian death as proof.
At the same time, there’s an inexplicable trend for news outlets to falsely claim Hamas is undercounting casualties. The Guardian newspaper has posited the true death toll in Gaza might be 335,500. Oxfam, a British charity, has (erroneously) called Israel’s war against Hamas the single deadliest conflict in this generation. Britain’s medical journal The Lancet has said the number of deaths in Gaza are 186,000 “or even more.” All of these outlandish claims and more would not be possible without Hamas’ erroneous claims that the civilian death toll in Gaza is vastly higher than it is, and that Hamas fighters play no role in Gaza’s devastation.
Andrew Fox, a former British paratrooper and the lead author on the Henry Jackson Society Study, notes that Hamas’ distortions stoke antisemitism: “The impact of uncritically reporting these flawed figures extends beyond misinformation; it has stoked antisemitic rhetoric and violence globally. By perpetuating narratives that disproportionately cast Israel as the aggressor and dismiss Hamas’ culpability, media outlets have legitimised hatred against the Jewish diasporah.”
For millennia, both Muslim and Christian communities have burnished a stereotype of Jews as uniquely bloodthirsty and malevolent. False claims that Israeli soldiers are targeting women and children as they fight in Gaza play into this terrible prejudice.
We all must work to call attention to the western media’s unthinking use of flawed Hamas data. The new report documenting exactly how egregiously Hamas distorts its reporting of casualties is a good place to start.

The moment the slaughter of 7 and 8 Octobre happened i send an email to Israel Gov. asking them to take arial photo's with drones/aeroplanes of the than known fields with marked/unmarked graves in gaza. When I went through their numbers at the time, it appeared that among the total dead, less than 1000 would have been "civilian" men. This out of a total of 28K dead people. Not possible. 7000 dead civilian women, 14000 dead children and just 1000 dead civilian men. I have a bridge to sell. Amazing how many news outlets were in line to buy it.

On the one hand they report that the Gaza infrastructure, especially the health services, have been decimated, and yet they are able to keep a running total of deaths down to the single person.
Strange that we can be told that the death toll is 34,149. Not to the nearest 100, but to the exact individual.
The SA news recently quoted that the number of injured was 100,008. I wonder what those last 8 injuries are. What does injury include? Does it include twisted ankles or stubbed toes?

I have always thought the figures to be highly exaggerated and/or distorted. It seems remarkable that there were more civilians killed in Gaza in little over a year than the total casualties killed over several years in the war in Ukraine! Does no one see the disparity?
I guess it is easier to blame Israel. Maybe if we considered the underdogs again, the world would view us more favorably.

I always point out that if only women and children are being killed, where are the men? If true, it can only mean that the men have abandoned their women and children. They are either hiding under ground in the tunnels themselves without letting the women and children share the safer positions or have left Gaza entirely leaving their women and children behind unprotected. Not exactly heroic behavior.

Numbers are totally exaggerated, I like to see proof, all western countries would have that. Israel is western. Biblically all those countries belonging to Islam was all given to Israel. Although Israel has only a small part of it. As you know Palestinians do not even exist, they are Philistine, originally from Edom. I see your disparity, why doesn't anyone else? It should be shared.

I've been ready for many...MANY years of the grisly techniques the Arabs use to inflate their casualty stats to the Western media. It has been found out that they will have the media photograph a causality area, then afterwards strip the bodies, reclothe them differently, then place them in other areas in different positions/poses and have the media come in and rephotograph the scene. They've even been known to mutilate the bodies if they suspect they might be found out, so they look completely different. I doubt our Creator would ever approve of such behavior from a G-d fearing people.

I don't think there are any. It is fiction, no proof of anything, just that you can't trust anything that comes from their mouth. you can't call them animals, as animals have dignity not human either. They belong to the fallen angels called demons.
