Dostoevsky Was an Antisemite. I Still Think You Should Read Him

Are vegan foods considered kosher? I would imagine so since they are entirely plant based.
Thank you for raising the interesting issue. Typically, vegan foods are more likely to be kosher and certainly involve fewer kosher problems than other foods. However, we cannot simply assume such foods are kosher due to multiple potential issues:
(1) Processed foods are liable to have minor unlisted additives – which their producer has no legal obligation to report.
(2) Although most vegans do not consume insects, the process for cleaning vegan foods – especially leafy vegetables and the like – is not likely to be as rigorous as Jewish law requires.
(3) Vegan foods may have been processed on equipment which is also used for non-kosher foods, rendering all food made on them non-kosher.
(4) If a vegan food contains wine or wine vinegar, that renders it non-kosher since wine must be specially prepared to be considered kosher.
(5) In the case of a restaurant, vegan foods are not kosher since many cooked foods must be at least partially prepared by a Jew.
(6) In the Land of Israel, vegan is certainly not kosher without proper certification because fruit and vegetables must be properly tithed.
