Judaism has engaged with astrology for thousands of years. One Torah-observant astrologer explains what your birth chart can teach you about yourself.

"Kosher astrology" are two words that rarely appear in the same sentence. But within Jewish thought, they’re not as contradictory as they seem.

Judaism has engaged with astrology for thousands of years. The Ramchal (Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, an 18th-century Jewish mystic and philosopher) describes a world in which God uses structured systems to guide creation, with stars as instruments through which divine wisdom is expressed. Rabbi Ibn Ezra explored how astrological signs impact personality and spiritual tendencies. The Ran, an influential 14th-century Spanish Talmudist and legal authority, considered knowledge of astrology a path to recognizing the greatness of the Creator.

Rabbi Yitzchok A. Pinkesz discovered this field unexpectedly, overhearing a conversation with an astrologer during a casual car ride with a friend. That moment sparked his curiosity, leading to a 15-year exploration. As a Torah-observant astrologer, his work is rooted in a careful weaving of Jewish thought, psychology, and personal growth.

That journey became his book, Kosher Astrology: A Jewish Guide to Celestial Wisdom. Spanning hundreds of pages with comprehensive charts and diagrams, the book draws on halachic (Jewish legal) discussions and classical texts to reclaim astrology within a Torah framework.

This is the distinction between a mainstream and a kosher view of astrology. While the influence is innately present, a person has a choice in how to channel that inborn energy. The moment a soul enters the world, it arrives aligned with a specific configuration, a precise timing that reflects the mission and tendencies of that soul.

The Talmud teaches, for example, that a person born under the influence of Mars may carry a strong, even aggressive energy. But that same energy can be elevated and directed toward something constructive, like becoming a surgeon.

In practical terms, a birth chart allows a person to better understand themselves. It highlights strengths that may otherwise remain hidden and challenges that are meant to be refined. There are also charts that focus on growth over time or on relationships, helping people navigate connection, tension, and compatibility with greater awareness.

Pinkesz devotes significant time to each reading and warns against oversimplification. "A human being is complex, and so is the system that reflects them. True understanding requires looking deeper, seeing how different elements interact, and recognizing that no chart replaces free will."

Through his work with individuals and couples, he has seen how this awareness shifts the way people approach their lives. When a person understands their tendencies, they can take responsibility and choose how to respond.

"Several years ago, I was doing an astrological consultation for a 40-year-old single woman. She mentioned that a man she had dated the previous year had recently contacted her and wanted to try again. They had dated for a few months, but things had not ended well. She was adamant that she didn't want to put herself through another painful experience and told me she didn't think she could afford to give him another chance.

“I looked at their couple's chart and saw one particularly difficult connection and several very positive ones. I went through the difficult aspect in detail and helped her understand the underlying conflicting energy between them in that specific area. That energy was not going to disappear. But by understanding its roots, she could potentially accept that they simply operated differently in that one area.

“At the same time, I told her about several powerful positive connections that could potentially counter that one area of difficulty.

“I told her it would ultimately come down to whether she could find a comfort zone with the difficult area, because there was real potential positivity between them. I encouraged her to give him another chance. She agreed, and within three months they were engaged. They got married, had a child, and recently I received an invitation to their son's bar mitzvah."

Rabbi Yitzchok A. Pinkesz

When kosher astrology is used correctly, it points to something larger: that God is deeply involved in our lives, that each person was created with a purpose and a plan, and with specific gifts we are here to develop and bring into the world.

As Pinkesz writes in his book: "Kosher Astrology can help you understand your struggles, your inner conflicts, your gifts, strengths and superpowers. It can help you understand your purpose in this world. It weaves together how your struggles and difficulties, and overcoming them, are part of the process that is going to turn you into a powerful person who can then fully utilize your unique gifts. It helps you make sense of your life, including the difficult times. It brings clarity to who you are and what you are meant to be doing.

“It can show you the steps you first have to take: inner healing, resolving conflicts, or moving past the inner negative voices that might be holding you back. It can show you sides of yourself that are currently completely hidden and illuminate the pathway to recognizing skills you didn't even know you had. It is a powerful blueprint of your design and the potential of who you can blossom into being."

Astrology is pagan and illogical. You're ascribing power to an inanimate object in space. Can a Jew worship rocks on Earth? Judaisms god is transcendent, anthropomorphic and universal.

Saying "Astrology is pagan" is like saying "animals are not kosher". No, there are SOME animals that are not kosher, and other animals that are kosher. Its the same with astrology. There are some versions of astrology that were practiced as part of idol worship where they worshiped and bowed down to planets. That is strictly forbidden. However, there is also a strictly kosher version of astrology that is written about in the Torah and Talmud and that is highly praised in Judaism!

Check out the book, Kosher astrology: A Jewish Guide To Celestial Wisdom. It contains all the Torah sources that clearly show the kosher version of astrology. It is an eye-opening book!

Astrology is pagan and devoid of any logical basis. How can you say that theres any connection to either monotheism or science?

This is a great book. Please understand that this is a nuanced topic and it goes into detail what’s Halachically permissible and what’s forbidden. It requires detailed knowledge of Halacha- in other words don’t decide for yourself, ask an Orthodox Rabbi who is well versed in Halacha. Read the Haskamos. Aish is a Torah institution and would not promote something assur!

This is a highly comprehensive and meticulously developed work. The material is presented with clarity, rendering complex concepts accessible without oversimplification. The inclusion of well-designed graphics, structured charts, and extensive, detailed references reflects a significant level of scholarly research. Overall, it is a remarkably impressive contribution that establishes the volume as a substantive and authoritative resource.

I loved the book Kosher Astrology! Especially the 75 pages of full color illustration! Those were so helpful to understand astrology both from a kosher perspective and how astrology actually works!

When you incorporate astrology into your life path, it changes, a whole new world opens up for you, and you discover things about yourself that you didn't know. You can use your free will with greater awareness and personal achievements.

We are discussing a celestial science and Rabbi Pinkus has mastered the science of astrology and helps others heal tremendously. Although opposition to him is sparse and in between it clearly illustrates that some are simply ignorant of the subject and comment on his wonderful achievements with little or no understanding of what is the issue.

Rav Aryeh Kaplan said that astrology was a valid science, but we've LOST that knowledge & it is NOT was is "taught" today in the world at large. On the other hand, it is taught by R. Avraham Abul'afiyah (commentator on Sefer HaYetzira) & R. Nechuniyah ben HaQanei (author of Sefer HaBahir & Ana Bekhoach...). R. Abul'afiyah teaches to go ABOVE astrological systems, while the Bahir would USE them. There are small groups around Israel now studying this in a practical way to reach higher meditative states.

Looks like a really interesting book, and I'm tempted to buy - but there is no way to read a sample on the Amazon page, not even a Table of Contents. I never buy a book unless I can at least read a short sample, so sadly will have to forego this one. It does look wonderful, though! Maybe I will give in to temptation this time! As an amateur astrologer and a Christian of Jewish descent, I would like to learn more about my Jewish heritage.

It is the most pleasant read I've ever had. Very pleasant to the eyes throughout. If there's one book I recommend you buy blindly, its this one. Visually stimulating and so organized, thorough and straight.

It's as wise - and as safe - to practice so-called "kosher astrology" from a book, as it would be to practice brain surgery from a book.

The Chazon Ish once gave brain surgery advice "from a book" & it was successful.

That's like saying it's as wise and as safe as using plants for healing.
