The Questions Everyone's Afraid to Ask About Jews

With antisemitic violence and harassment at an all-time high, it’s a scary time to be a Jew. But you know what feels even scarier? Being a silent one.
Like so many others, I’ve found myself with a renewed connection to my Jewish identity post-October 7th. Sure, I grew up going to Hebrew school and Jewish summer camp. I became a bat mitzvah and felt comfortable parading around our synagogue as the cantor’s daughter. But I never shouted my Jewishness from the rooftops. So why do I feel compelled to do that now? It’s pretty simple, really.
Because it feels like my life depends on it.
With antisemitic violence and harassment at an all-time high, it’s a scary time to be a Jew. But you know what feels even scarier? Being a silent one.
Being silent means agreeing with all the lies being told about us. It means accepting what’s happening around the world as normal and okay. It means signing our own death warrant.
I never thought we would be here—I went the first 40 years of my life without experiencing a hint of antisemitism. Yet, the notion of history repeating itself now feels more like a foregone conclusion than an abstract idea.
Can’t they see this is how it started? And how easily it escalated into total disaster when nobody cared enough to speak up? We have a blueprint of what this situation can turn into, and I think I speak for all of us when I say: no thank you. I refuse to accept that fate for myself and for my children. I refuse to be silent out of respect for my late grandfather, his tattooed numbers etched in my memory as permanently as they were etched onto his arm. Never again.
So where does this leave me in practical terms? Every day I wake up and see more discrimination, bias, and violence against Jews than any other group would ever be expected to tolerate. And I find myself asking the same question: how much can I speak up about it without alienating the people around me?
Silence isn’t an option, as we’ve already established. But if I go overboard, will my friends (and hopefully allies) start to ignore me? Will they begin to gloss over the content or even hit the unfollow button as I try to convey the pain and injustice we’re facing on a daily basis? Exactly how many cute photos of my kids and dog will balance the scale? It feels like a bad version of One Bid from The Price is Right—stand up for yourself as much as you can without going over! Precisely how Jewish am I allowed to be?
Those on the other side seem to have no qualms about proclaiming their hate loudly, both with their words and actions. They call for a violent intifada, shatter the windows of Jewish-owned businesses, set fire to our synagogues, and hunt us down in a premeditated pogrom. So why is there such deafening silence on the side of the good guys? Why are we letting the bullies run the show?
I’m enormously grateful for the accidental activists who’ve emerged since October 7th—they’ve saved my sanity during this horrific time. But we need more. We need more people who aren’t afraid. We need more people who have moral clarity and the chutzpah to speak up. We need more Elphabas.
Do You Support Israel’s War?
A friend recently asked me if I support the war and the way Israel is fighting it. I stopped in my tracks, completely thrown by the question. Do I support the war? You mean the one we didn’t start, never wanted, and would end tomorrow if they simply returned the hostages? The one that if we don’t fight, we’ll be all but conceding to another October 7th (or worse)? We’re fighting for our survival, there is no alternative.
Do I support the way Israel is fighting? Like how they’re dropping leaflets and making phone calls to warn civilians to evacuate? How they’re being meticulously strategic to avoid civilian casualties? Tell me what other army would do this and still receive worldwide criticism. We know a thing or two about genocide (the word was literally created to describe the Holocaust). If that’s what we intended to do here, we’re really bad at it. (And G-d forbid anyone criticize Hamas for hiding among civilians, stealing aid, or refusing to return the hostages to end the war that they started.)
The bias is clear, the double standards are plentiful, and the propaganda is effective. I’ve seen even the most well-intentioned ally have their heartstrings tugged on by an artistically beautiful Faces of Gaza photo essay, swept up with so much sympathy they felt the need to repost it. They don’t understand that even this seemingly benign post translates to one very clear message, same as all the others: blame the Jews. They don’t think about the people who may see this and choose to act on it. They don’t realize it poses a very real threat to our families, or how the security guards at my kids’ (Jewish) school now carry massive machine guns on a daily basis. They don’t know when I share photos of my children, I crop out the school name embroidered on their uniforms…just in case.
Being a Jew is special. We’re good people—do I even have to say that? But we are. We believe in peace and tikkun olam (repairing the world). We give tzedakah and perform mitzvot. We contribute positively to society and support other minorities in their time of need. We pray together. Celebrate simchas together. Grieve together. We have an inherent shared experience of resiliency in the constant fight for our survival as 0.2% of the world’s population and the crime of being born a Jew. While they call for intifada and tear down American flags, we gather hand in hand to sing Hatikvah, call for the return of the hostages, and pray for peace. Can’t they see we’re the good guys? Why are we the last people on Earth to earn the world’s sympathy and understanding, even behind terrorists? I will never understand.
It all feels like a bad dream I can’t wake up from. I want the hostages to come home and the war to end. I want people to stop being taught to hate us from birth. I want to go back to worrying about mundane things that have no bearing on my right to exist. I want to remember what life was like before.
Until then, I’ll pray good triumphs over evil. I’ll hope more people will seek the truth and speak up for us. And I’ll keep being a proud Jew, for there is no other path I could ever choose.
A version of this op-ed was originally published on The Times of Israel

If a religious person is against zionism, that means he/ she doesn't understand the Tanach in most of the holy books and grace after meals talks about zion, which is a mountain and another name for Jerusalem, there is a saying" from zion will come out Torah, and the word of G_d from Jerusalem " so in my humble opinion zion, being Jewish and Israel is intertwined, and when haters of Israel call Jews a Zionist technically to them all Jews are considered zionists even if they consider themselves not being zionists were or not you believe in a unorthodox government of Israel
I recently read in my Passover Mispacha magazine that Mark Levine is a Jew that is proud of being Jewish and a friend of Israel, and he will stay silent either he will speak against anti semites of any kind
When asked “you aren’t a Zionist, are you ?” one can respond by asking back: “if you were asked to agree that the place where you were born (and where you may still have family and friends) does not have the right to exist, would you agree?” then point out that this in essence what they’re asking.
Kol Kavod. We ARE witnessing history repeating itself. The present administration just gave a rapid anti-Semite a medal. If that does not show the similarities between Nazi Europe and today, nothing will. The step descendants of them are nearly copying their antics. Be proud to be a Jew! Wear your Jewishness openly!
Do not send children to public schools, find charter and or Chabad schools. Send your children to lesser universities that do not have the pro-terrorist organizations.
Do your homework! I did for my now grown children and now they are raising their children as Jews.
What is wrong to send children to Yeshivas( Hebrew Day School) to learn their heritage, not only charter or Chabad schools, there are other options for parents not only the two choices you mentioned
That was the right thing to do
Very good.
Thank you for sharing. Antisemitism is as old as the Bible. In parshat Mikets, the Egyptians would not eat with the Hebrews because they found it abhorrent! So how can we fight antisemitism?
I am glad to see here, that non Jews are standing with Jews and Israel, there should be more non Jews and Jews to stand up for Jews and Israel, because like before it starts with the Jews and ends up with everyone else and the world can be in danger if Iran G _d forbid gets nukes
Wonderful! So true. I'm so proud to be a Jew. I wish the world would see we are the "good guys".
I agree with you 100%
I went thru this in my youth- therapists told me I’m too Jewish or I wear it on my sleeve. Jewish men told me I’m too Jewish for them
Therapists! In my 87 years on this planet, I have seen a disappointing amount of ignorance and stupidity in a profession that should be more informed and wise. I have seen harm done instead of the help that was needed.
When one finds a bright and intelligent therapist, the results can be marvelous and I have seen some wonderful examples.
One has to be perceptive enough to know the difference. We expect these folks to be right on the mark, but sadly, not all of them have what it takes to be helpful or knowledgeable.
Good to see that people point out that they aren’t all sacrosanct and can have detrimental effects on those whom they are supposed to help. מזל טוב to everyone who was lucky enough to find a therapist who was worth it!
So you must find therapists and men that are proud of being Jewish
Thank you for a very well written article coming from the heart of a Jewish mother. I do fear for the antisemitism that is about us lately. I think we will always be the bad guys. I hope there will be peace enough to return the hostages that are still alive.
Exactly! Toda! Important not to be silent but still be respectful. From some of my conversations over the past 14 mos or so, I do feel there are more supporters than we realize, but many are silent. I wear my mezzuzah plus various styles of the Israel National Baseball Cap when I am out and about - loud and proud. Am Yisroel Chai! However I am very frustrated, saddened and disappointed as to what is going on socially and politically.
Beautiful and courageous! I identify with it entirely! Congratulations!
The main reason the terrorists are able to promulgate their propaganda so effectively, is they have a willing partner in the leftist media. A media that lies for the Democrats and always paints conservatives in the worst light.
I’m 68. I grew up in NYC, amongst Holocaust survivors. I was a registered Democrat when I was 18. The Democrats supported Israel at that time. Over time I became more conservative. At my congregation, in Green Bay, in the ‘90s the Rabbi said nothing when a Bat Mitzvah called Rush Limbaugh listeners “riff-raff.” This tolerance of dehumanizing conservatives, is easy to spread to other groups, like calling Israeli’s “occupiers snd oppressors.”
Nobody who supports Israel’s existence should be tolerating the pro terrorist elements of the Democrats party.
At 72, I'm right with you. To this day my liberal sisters have never been able to speak the words October 7th.
Rush Limbah referred to women as femi n(*is. (You can guess why I won" type that word). Also, are you sure he was a friend of the Jews? I personally do not fall into lockstep and am always asking questions, but he was a very vitriolic individual. Re: democrats and anti Semitism. There is plenty of it on both sides of the aisle.
Leah Your post brought tears to my eyes. I am an elderly gentile woman living in the Garden Route in George South Africa. I support Israel, her GOD given right to exist and live in the land that HE gave to Abraham and his descendants. I have come to realize that what is taking place is Ha Satan & his demons using human agents to prevent the coming of The Anointed One, The son of King David as foretold by the prophets. I belong to a congregation that regularly prays for Israel, the IDF, the Bereaved, the injured, the Holocaust survivors, for unity within the nation and wisdom for the leadership. We have volunteers in Israel and support various ministries monetarily. May HaShem comfort and protect you and your family & grant you His Shalom.
Louise, it is people like you who give me hope for humanity!
It's like you took the words right out of my mouth. Why can't the world see that this is a battle between good and evil and Israel is NOT the evil. Why can't they see the contributions in technology and medicine and other fields that Israel has contributed to the world. Why can't they see that Israel is one of the first responder to a global catastrophe. What is wrong with the world?????????????
I dreamt a while back about fighting a war good vs evil. and Israel is on the good side and whoever supports the terrorists are on the evil side, the world should be thanking Israel not contemptuous Israel or taking them to court, in the end the world as to wake up if G _ d forbid Iran gets nukes, then Israel has to destroy them before the world goes nuked in any second, only Israel will have the guts to destroy Iran's nukes, also years before Israel destroyed the nukes from Iraq, first the worldcwas upset then the world thanked Israel later
This is an interesting discussion on the subject of identity. Who am I, who are you? We lost our identity in the Garden of Eden and have been trying to regain it ever since. We can regain our identity, but that is another subject of which I don't believe I have the full knowledge of explaining it as I am on the journey too!
The Jewish people ( obviously I'm not Jewish) are a fascinating people group. They also are a trigger point for Jews and non-Jews in regards to the identity issue. What is and what isn't.!!!
I have a motivation or desire for Jews to be more Jewish. This stems from the fact that humanity flourishes when we synchronise together, but it can only happen in truth. A transaction ultimately is only good if there is goodwill on both sides for the benefit of the other...
Thank you
I’m not Jewish but your article must be disseminated to the largest audience possible. It was easy to be passive and unaware in the late 30’s and the world eventually woke up to the result. Never again, I stand with Israel!
Thank you
Thank you Steve! You and people like you, such as Senator Fetterman are an inspiration!
I agree with this statement
Re: The bias. Sigh. I have heard versions of "those poor Palestinians" from other Jews. 🙁 On the contrary, I have a Christian friend who has been a supporter of Israel for a long time. The hatred of Israel and all Jews in general can ONLY be countered by education and religious observance. Also, please never be afraid to show your Magen David/Mezzuzeh/Chai. Wear these pieces of jewelry with pride!
I grieve for the loss of innocent lives. That includes German children in the 1940’s, Japanese civilians at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Palestinian children in Gaza. But I never forget that they were imperiled by the wars started by their leaders.
Yes! Of course I too feel awful for the innocent lives lost. However, the problem is that people forget what you have so eloquently stated. We always need to be reminded of who started these wars!
I'm also a proud Jew.I also want Shalom.Am Yisrael Chai.
From the bottom of my heart,Thank you.Thank you for saying this to the face of the whole world.I think all Jews, where ever we are, have the same thoughts and experiences as you.I have,in one year, been attacked twice,I've defended myself, but what happens next time?I'm 70,and fending off a couple of youngsters alone isn't very easy. And when the local Police are nowhere to be found, hen, what do I do?I also have to say it's quiet here, compared to other places.I'm situated in eastern Spain.
Thank you for sharing. It reminds me of the "other" people in the world who are not allowed to stand up for themselves as well. The ones who have been shunned since the Obama administration.
Thank you! I really needed your message this morning.
Thank you for reading.
Thank you so much Leah for speaking up and out about this place we find ourselves in history, again! I am a proud Jew! Am Israel Chai!
Fabulous article. Count me in as one who will not be silent. Am Yisrael Chai.
Amen, Am Yisrael Chai
Absolutely a time of Esther. Jew and Gentile alike need to stand against Jew hatred!
Well said and how true!
Not Jewish, but I stand with Israel! ❤️
Thank you!
Well said! Would that more of us, Jew and non-Jew alike speak up against the blind hatred of this important part of the human family.
Thank you for your wonderful, insightful, comprehensive, thorough expression of our current situation. it was a pleasure to read. The death toll in Ukraine is never mentioned, I'm sure vastly higher. The Hamas decree to rid the world of every last Jewish person is never mentioned. What would they do if it had been leveled at them?
Tree of Life Synagogue was a few blocks from my childhood home. My parents were married there. I knew well one of the victims.
Your essay should be published everywhere.
The terrorists have the same agenda like the Nazis( may their name be erased) to make the world " Juden Rein "( free of Jews), in Gaza they have the book " Mein Kenif" ( my fight) in Arabic by Adolf Hitler( may his name be erased) the original was written in German. you can not have peace with people that want you dead, and a Holocaust Survivor from the the kibbutz in the south called the terrorists Nazis( may their name be erased) that speak Arabic
What a beautiful letter. This should be published in every local newspaper. I too am a proud Jew. I wear my pride in many visible means but most important I have been to Israel twice since October 7th to show my support by volunteering.
Amazing
Be proud!
Never cower!
Right, Am Yisrael Chai and " Never Again"
Beautiful! You are so brave Leah!
Thank you, and thanks for reading.
