Learn why negative traits don't define you and discover practical ways to shift your thoughts and behaviors towards positive change.

Embarking on the journey of self-improvement often involves understanding and reshaping our character traits. In this exploration, I reflect on the transformative power of acknowledging that our character traits do not define us inherently but are aspects that can be worked on and improved.

Handling Negative Character Traits

First and foremost, it's crucial not to identify with negative character traits as part of our identity. Rather than saying, "I am a high-anxiety person," recognizing that these are passing thoughts and feelings enables a shift towards change. Similar to how one doesn't proclaim, "I am COVID," but instead focuses on healing and improvement, negative character traits should be viewed as challenges to overcome.

Understanding the nature of character traits as tendencies rather than fixed identities is pivotal. If occasional envious thoughts arise, it doesn't constitute an envious trait. However, when negative thoughts become recurrent and influence our actions, a trait is formed. The key lies in recognizing these tendencies and joyfully working towards positive change.

One effective strategy is modeling behavior based on what a calm or virtuous person would do in a given situation. Identifying triggers that lead to the expression of negative traits is essential, whether it's encountering a boss or facing disappointment in a sports game. Awareness and preparation become the tools to navigate these situations and consciously shift behavior.

Taking Control of Your Emotions & Traits

It's important to consciously choose responses aligned with the person one aspires to be. Even if the emotions aren't immediately in sync, acting in a manner consistent with positive traits can lead to internal transformation. The adage "fake it till you make it" is reframed as "fake it till you awake it," emphasizing the belief in one's innate goodness and the potential for positive change.

Furthermore, addressing emotions in a healthy way is crucial. The upcoming class will delve into strategies for dealing with emotions without repression. The goal is to encourage individuals to embrace their natural state of being, which is inherently loving. The journey towards personal growth involves shedding layers of negativity accumulated through life's challenges and rediscovering the authentic and positive self within.
