I was wondering who the children of Adam and Eve married. If they were the world’s first people, who could they marry other than each other – meaning that brothers married sisters? Is that what happened?
Thank you for your good observation. The Talmud (Sanhedrin 58b) notes this as well. It explains that brothers did marry sisters in that generation. This was a one-time exception God made to the normal laws of incest (one of the Seven Noahide Laws) in order to populate the world. In fact, that Talmud applies to that generation the verse “The world was built on kindness” (Psalms 89:3). This was a kindness God did in order to “build” the world!
