Ivy League Double Standard

Safety first, except when it comes to the Jews.

It’s not a great time to be a president of an Ivy League university. But don’t feel too bad enjoying the slow-mo downfall of these ivory tower bastions because it’s even worse to be a Jew at one of these campuses.

The presidents of Harvard, Penn and MIT stumbled over their legalese and lost sight of the big picture that it’s indeed harassment to call for genocide of the Jews.

To her credit, Liz Magill, the president of Penn, resigned, and there is intense pressure for the other two to do the same.

Drawing the line between free speech and harassment is, in fact, tricky. But what is crystal clear is the hypocrisy and maddening double standard that is on full display.

Bret Stephens perhaps articulated the issue best in his recent New York Times column: “The double standard is this: Colleges and universities that for years have been notably censorious when it comes to free speech seem to have suddenly discovered its virtues only now, when the speech in question tends to be especially hurtful to Jews.”

This double standard cuts through the murk and is itself an example of ongoing antisemitic behavior.

In the video below, Maya Sulkin, an executive assistant at the Free Press, clearly demonstrates the double standard and the despicable unfair treatment Jews are experiencing on campus.

Anyone who supports antisemitism is a fool. Here in Australia we have a Foreign Minister who is a Lesbian and she has called on Israel to show restraint. I have seen Gay people in the UK calling for Palestine to be free. Do these people realise that they would be put to death in any Arab country: just as two men were recently put to death in Iran, for being homosexual. If you want to see oppression just look at how Arabs treat women. I’m not of the Jewish Faith but, I support the right of all people to worship Almighty God as they choose and not to be subjected to abuse by anyone else.

Hash-m is revealing the emptiness of our "sacred" institutions. Exposed, they fall by the wayside by people recognizing their falsity. Hash-m exposed Communism with the fall of the Soviet Union. Hedonism fell with the Greeks & Romans. Now "free speech" is also falling. Belief in "intellectual elite" & "enlightenment" has also fallen when university professors & presidents dance for the murder of innocent Jews. G-d messaged antisemites with the Turkish Minister who had a Heart attack during his rant in parliament about punishing Israel. Intellectualism is not synonymous with morality. Morality is defined by G-d's Torah. Not by morally bereft Hamas supporters in ivory Towers or your local newspaper. When all recognize Torah as True Morality we'll merit Mashiah. Pray for Mashiah

I taught a course on the Holocaust at a midwestern university for over a decade. Students used to ask me what it was like in Germany in the 1930’s, how this Jew hatred became pervasive and how professors were one of the first groups to join the Nazi party. We don't have to ask that question anymore. We are living through it now. We have the opportunity and the responsibility to speak out, to fight against this hatred, to do all we can so that the end is not the same. If not now…

It's been going on for some time, both in mistreatment of Jewish students and downgrading others in favor of protected classes.

It is not worth it for any Jewish student to attend any university or college where he/she might feel uncomfortable or threatened in the slightest way. You don't stay to fight, you don't stay to 'make a point'...just get out of there. You're dealing with nasty and at times violent 'people' (if you call them that). Professors won't pass you unless you say the 'right' things. Your physical/mental health is much more important. You'll find another place, a real college, which will help you reach your goals. And get a good job...with good people.

I think we can count two universities as Jewish, Brandeis and Tulane, we need Jewish billionaires and millionaires to step up and found two more.

Jewish students would then have a choice of 4 universities and need never go to any of their universities ever again.

Not all have the grades to attend those four, or the money to do so. Our kids and grandkids will have to face up to this hatred whether on Ivy League or other campuses. I wish them well.

What about Yeshiva University? It may not be considered (poison!) ivy, but it's got a solid reputation.

There are Jewish universities and my children used their year in Israel for college credit to graduate quickly. They had a masters degree within 3 years of Israel . We have 2 speech therapists snd I can’t imagine how they’d do better had they gone to a fancy college.

Another sign that an Ivy League degree is utterly meaningless in 2023.

What a time to be alive.

I agree with you completely! Btw--When it comes to a double standard, there is nothing new under the sun. The Jews have always been marginalized and pushed aside. However, the harassment has become much more obvious today. This was a well written essay.

Not to mention good brains. But if this is your choice, choose the alternatives well...
…There are decent liberal arts educations, which value genuine learning, and empathy and openness, out there.
