I live in a small apartment and I want to have guests who may stay overnight. Would I be allowed to open a sleeper sofar for them on Shabbat? (Because my apartment is small, there isn’t room to keep it open the entire day.)
Yes it would be fine. Just opening up something which folds open and closed, and does not contain connecting pieces, is not considered a form of “building” (boneh) on Shabbat. Another potential issue in is making a temporary “tent” (ohel) since the extended couch will now shield the area beneath it. However, since there is no interest in using the couch as a “roof” it does not count as a tent and so is permitted. (See Shulchan Aruch O.C. 315:5, Mishna Berurah 27.)
