Jerusalem author and lecturer Michael Kaufman has published nine books on Jewish thought. In his 86th year, his long, active day begins at 4 AM, and includes a vigorous workout – while reading and studying – on his elliptical trainer, and a daily session in the gym. Kaufman writes all day at the computer on his standing (“shtender”) desk, never sitting except to eat (mostly plant-based food). Whenever possible, he eschews car or bus, walking briskly everywhere in Jerusalem. He is married to Marcia, and they have nine children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
