The DIY Congregation

December 21, 2017 | by

Congregation Beth Israel was not a wealthy one, so Rabbi Silverman was dependent on his congregants for upkeep and maintenance of the shul.

One time he asked Dave Shuster to take a look at the HVAC system as he was in the business. The only way to reach the ducts was to actually climb into the attic above the women’s section.

Concerned for her husband's safety, Cindy Shuster waited for him in the women’s section.

Unbeknownst to her, there was a sisterhood Tehilim prayer group that was assembling. Most of the ladies assumed that Cindy had already started praying.

Worried about her husband, Cindy looked up toward the ceiling and yelled, "Dave, Dave, are you up there? Did you make it okay?"

Let’s just say there was quite the commotion from the women’s section when Dave's deep voice echoed down, "Yes, I made it up here just fine!"
